It's the open single fare - no penalty.

Out of interest, regarding penalty fares, should you ever be in the position of being asked to pay one and the open single fare is less than the penalty fare, then you can insist on paying that (and not the penalty fare).

(Section 8 (2) of the Penalty Fares Rules 2002)

If there is no ticket check at Cardiff then there won't be any problem. Last time I was there there were no barriers.

There definitely is at central, I was there yesterday.

I regularly do this without an issue. I purchase a ticket from my station near work, jump off at Wimbledon to have several beers with a mate, and then use the same ticket to continue to the station near my home. The ticket gets rejected at the barriers, but I always go to the gate, show my ticket and the guard opens the gate without a fuss, both on the way in and out.

I have also had a friend of mine sold a ticket that was Dorking to Surbiton (not via London Terminals) on the premise that he could travel to Clapham Junction, have a few beers and then use the same ticket home.

Based on those two scenarios, I would imagine that you would be fine.

    You are drawing false conclusions

Your tickets sound like standard walk on fares - on which break of journey at intermediate stations is normally allowed.

Different rules apply to discount price advance purchase tickets, which are only valid for the exact journey/times printed on them

If there are now barriers at Cardiff (it is a while since I was there) then a ticket to or from Queen Street sounds a wise precaution for OP

It doesn't matter for me as I've already bought me ticket and I'm happy with the fare that I've paid.

My question is purely hypothetical -- althought I can see how your suggestion could be very handy for other people contemplating the same/similar trip.

You can always buy ticket for a longer journey and get down at any station before your original destination.

No one can force you to travel till your destination.

People can change their mind where to go at anytime :)

PS: But use this with caution in Nation Express coaches! If record shows no passenger to destination X, then driver may take a route avoiding X. However, trains are unlikely to change their course.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

You are right in saying you cannot be forced to stay on the train, though you must have a ticket that is valid for the journey that you do actually make.

Blimey I've just found this buried down deep in the T&Cs of Advance Tickets
    "
    Break of journey
You may not start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station except to change to/from connecting trains as shown on the ticket(s) or other valid travel itinerary."

That's the rules, and a revenue protection inspector, could issue you with a penalty fare or a new walk on ticket or if you kicked up a fuss a transport copper to nick you for fare evasion.

However, there's always ways to bend the rules, see dzug's post above
