Getting off a train before the 'real' destination.

I've already booked my tickets and I'm not going to do this, but its a hypothetical question thats piqued my interest.

In Autumn, I'm travelling from the Lake District to Cardiff and the
train fare is a very reasonable £42.00. However, if I book the ticket from The Lake District to Carmarthen (the same train, just several stops and nearly 2 hours down the line), the fare drops to £26.00.

So, my hypothetical questioon is, if you booked the cheaper fare and got off before your destination, would you be doing a big no-no and leaving yourself wide open to a financial slap on the wrist, and if it was a financial slap on the wrist, how would it be calculated ?

p.s. apologies if the question has been asked before :o

Do you not mean getting off 2 stops after your booked destination?

Edit:- I have just realised my Welsh geography might not be up to scratch.....:o

From looking at the Route/itinerary, its another 6 stops and 1 hour and 50 minutes of extra journey, for £16.00 less.

Especially as you weren't feeling well Murphy... and you needed to get off the train at Cardiff for some fresh air... and then the train left without you.:D

Wellllllll, theres getting off the train and then theres [STRIKE]doiing a runner[/STRIKE] leaving the station ;)

I'm not a puiblic transport buff, & I'm fairly sure that someone who knows train ticket T&Cs inside and out will probably know the answer, but surely you can't get into bother for travelling LESS than you've paid for, or can you ?

If there is no ticket check at Cardiff then there won't be any problem. Last time I was there there were no barriers.

If there is a ticket check you will be asked - well may be asked, depends how kind the checker is feeling - to pay the full walk on fare for the journey you have just made. Over £100.

Is that equivalent to the 'Open Single/Anytime/Off Peak' etc fare, or a punative amount? either way, Ouch.
It doesn't seem right some how, does it ?

It's the open single fare - no penalty.

An insurance policy would be to buy (in advance) a single ticket from Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Central - £1.30 - and hand that in at any ticket check

Or the other way round, and actually use it - Queen Street is handy for the centre anyway
