MOT Epxiration?

How about this then, I was a hackney taxi driver with a new vehicle, but according to my local council I had to get an mot from a year old instead of the standard 3 years, so if it had failed its mot in those first 3 years is it legal to drive as a normal car ?
The extra MOTs are a condition of getting a taxi licence.
If an 18 month old taxi was being used as a private car having failed an MOT then it wouldn’t be illegal from the MOT point of view but obviously you would be open to prosecution for whatever made it fail the MOT (bald tyre, lights not working etc)
Given the general inflexibility of government computer systems I’m surprised the computer doesn’t say “No” when asked to do an MOT on a car that is only 12 months old.0 -
If your MOT has run out, you cannot use it on a public road
By using it, you commit an offence.
You are however, allow and given grace to pre-book an MOT into a garage of your choice and then drive it at that stated time and date to the garage for testing.0 -

Actually it's not just a condition of the licence - it's part of the original legislation which requires MOTs to be held.
Private cars need an MOT certificate from 3 years after registration; taxis and (I think) minibuses must hold a valid MOT from a year after registration.0 -
You don't get a 13 month MoT if you submit the car earlier than 1 month beforehand!
Assuming testing on the 20th July
MoT expires 16th July - test 20th July - new MoT expires 19th July
MoT expires 16th August - test 20th July - new MoT expires 16th August
MoT expires 25th September - test 20th July - new MoT expires 19th July
The MoT certificate contains these wordsTo preserve the anniversary of the expiry date the earliest you can present your vehicle for test is xx/yy/zzzz
xx/yy being the date of ISSUE of the certificate zzzz being the year of issue + 1
Bottom line on grace periods etc. is that certain police forces may decide not to prosecute, but the LAW says you can't use the car (except to drive to a pre-booked test)
It's not hard to just book an MoT for 4 weeks before the current certificate expires, if it fails on a minor issue, you have the time to sort it out whilst still driving the car legally (depending on the fault!) Also gives time for the pass to recorded on the database so you can buy your tax-disc online.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
only allowed to add the days on if presented less than 30? or is it 28 days before its due.
Something like that, Also its one item the camera cars can now detect, eeehh i remember when an
MOT was an afterthought. get 2 years of tax on one MOT.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

you could be right there, but private hire cabs in the area I live in don't need a mot in the first 3 years, but hackneys do. Can I just say as well that the local council do actually do far stricter tests every 6 months on all taxis regardless of age, and they could knock you off the road even if you just passed in an mot station on the same day.Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?0 -

I stand corrected, cheers
on a pedantic note a quick google reveals that MOTs came in for cars over 10 years old in 1960, reduced to cars over 3 in 1967 and reduced to over 1 year for taxis & mini buses in 19830 -
If my mot does not run out til 6/8/10 and I take it to have a mot tomorrow and it fails do I still have until 6/8 to get work done and drive it legaly on roads til then?0
-
Yes. Your current MOT would still be valid.
(Whether or not the car is legally roadworthy is a separate issue!)0 -
