  • i have personally seen a cat B be returned to the road, it is a merc ML, the vehicle was rolled several times, it was painstakingly rebuilt over a 12month period, VIC'd passed mot'd passed, insured and is taxed and is still owned by the repairer.

it isnt impossible to put a cat b on the road, its made more difficult by someone swapping out an engine with flood water in and replacing it with intensions of putting it on the road then giving up and passing it on this causes complications with a vic test. the ML had no defaced VIN though??

The car will not be put back on the road. You have spent a fortune trying to do so. CAT B's are not legally able to be resold and you would be breaking the law in doing so.

Unless you get the car regraded to CAT C which you seem to have thrown the toys at doing even though it was likely to work it wont happen.

I can see you "passing" the VIC after lots of effort and costs to be told that as a CAT B it can't be put back on the road afterall. Why is it you think the law is different for you? I suspect DVLA etc are simply happy to take your money and fob you off rather than deal with you but at no point will they allow the car back on the roads and even if they do it will never be able to be sold or MOT'd/taxed etc without as it will be recorded as CAT B.

no not allowed to be sold but can be passed on between people no law against that! if it passed vic he can apply for the v5 as the vic marker will be taken off record, it will be mot'd as its not tested for CATB its tested for roadworthiness, after mot and inspection if required and insured will be taxed and will be back on the road.
  • The OP can come back and tell us when its back on the road. I think we'll be waiting a long time. I think no insurers will touch it, I doubt it will past a VIC and its going to be in his possession for good until its scrapped as he can't sell it. What a waste of time and money.

This information comes from an HPI check company. Please read very carefully, as it explains the categories, and why they are so categorised, and it also explains what can and cannot be done with a vehicle in each category.

    Categories Of Write-Off
An explanation of the categories of write-off are listed below:

Category A. A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.

Category B. A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the vehicle should never return to the road.

Category C. An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category D. A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.

Category F. A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.

Theft These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the vehicle as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently.

(edit) This next paragraph is VERY important.

***Vehicles categorised as A, B or C require a VIC test before the DVLA will issue a new registration document. This will then be noted on the V5C. See www.direct.gov.uk for more information on VIC testing.***

    •.

It does not say MUST be crushed, and it does say you can get a new V5 which you only actually need if you intend to use it on the road

I have the opportunity to buy a very cheap Cat B (for my wife who needs a run around) write off which has been put back on the road and run successfully for 4 years. There is a lot of information on the internet saying that Cat B write offs can't be sold. Can anybody point me in the direction of the relevant legislation.

Thank you for highlighting the important parts of this post. But I think there are still people who won't or can't read it.

If a 'Certificate of Destruction' has been issued for the vehicle, then it may well be impossible to return the car to road use. If the car you refer to has been on the road for 4 years, then it is highly likely that it has had a VIC. Check the V5, on the front it should say 'Vehicle extensively repaired and/ or identity checked. There is a link in a post above, to the relevant government website. Go to it and search for VIC. Look for the sign post that says 'vehicle enquiry', input your details and see if there is a 'VIC@ marker on the database for your car.

This is the site you need to go to. Enter the reg, and the make.

FYO. The vehicle is now insured, and has been for 2 months. It passed the VIC on 2nd November, and has the relevant stickers attached by the police. I have no intention of selling it. It's obvious you haven't read a single post in this thread, as this information has been divulged on more than one occasion. Is it just me, or do I detect a great deal of jealousy here?

That its fair they want the same premium but to devalue the car by 20% in the event of an accident...
Having re-read the relevant posts, I have to agree with you!:o

the car was re-presented for inspection on the 2nd November 2010. This inspection involves a much deeper check on the vehicle, and includes tests carried out by a forensics officer from the police. The test took 1hr 50 mins. To cut a long story short, the forensics officer was happy to confirm that my car is the vehicle it is purporting to be, but the engine number does not match that which the car was issued with. Investigations will be carried out as to why the engine number does not match, and hopefully, I will be given the all clear in a couple of days, at which point I will be able to apply for a new V5(C), and go through the process of MOT, and taxing the car. It will then be returned to the road on it's original VRM.:j

So it was presented yesterday, the engine number doesnt match, you'll get the all clear in a couple of days but its passed the VIC?
Why the delay in the all clear?

To see if it's really worthwhile, Whats the spec of the car, age etc and how much have you spent so far.
