    hi phillip..its been a while...but if people go to page 2 of this thread they will note i was duped into buying a cat b from fleabay and not realising it was cat b til log book came stating it had already been vic tested...that was in june this year....for one week it was a nightmare for me...but with some home work and reassurance from phillips post...i had it insured and taxed no problem...only thing out of the norm was my insurers wanted a engineers report which i got from a local garage costing me £38. so my 10,000 miles, 4 yr old corsa is still running as good as new...thank goodness.

    Only licenced dismantlers are allowed to purchase category B write off's and the rules state they MUST destroy the vehicle
    after removing saleable parts.

    Someone will be getting a slapped wrist.

    It looks like its possible but as you say, insurers have never been mentioned and neither has costs involved (is it worthwhile?).
    It also seems to have been quite a long drawn out process.

    Performance direct were able to insure my wife on the Cat B write off. In the end we didn't buy it as someone else was willing to buy it for a three figure sum, rather than the two figure sum we offered, but we did have the insurance ready to go. The cost for the insurance was "normal".

    in my circumstances and what i paid...definately no...but least i was able to make good a bad situation as i would ve not had any funds for another car if i had to legally scrap the cat b i purchased...the negative is if i was ever wanting to sell the car i would have to explain to joe public what phillip is trying to explain and despite this thread having several pages, i really dont think any of you are really convinced this is possible.
    after researching and experiencing what i know now...i would again consider a newish model cat b as long it has its mot'd and vic tested and made apparant at time of sale, the general info portrayed out there works to your favour and keeps the prices low, ensure the owner has been using it for some time and or get a engineers report before comencing the sale.:beer:

    I had no reason to doubt whether it was possible or not, my own main questions (without reading it all again) were how do you get them as cat a and b round here need bought by a registered breaker (at least it was the last time I was at a salvage auction) and did it save money/was it viable to do.
    It all seemed to get lost in defensive replys by the OP.
