Fair enough what you're doing because you'll have bought the car for pennies due to it's status.

Do we know that for a fact?

I have not, nor do I intend to divulge, the price I paid for the car. Suffice to say I am content with the price I paid. The car is costing me less than half the cost of an undamaged car of the same specification.

The intention on starting this thread was to try to explain to people that they could save money by buying a category B car and returning it to road use.

Obviously not all cat B cars are a worthwhile proposition, but they can be found, as has happened in my case.

Most people believe that because the insurance companies say it should not be returned to road use, that the car is a total wreck. That is simply not the case. The law says that a category A, B, or C car MUST be presented for a VIC, and after the car receives a pass certificate, can be returned to road use, subject to MOT, tax and insurance.

I know the history of my car, but do you think if you walk into a garage, or even buy privately, that you will be informed of the full history of any potential purchase?

It just seems to me that no matter what I say, there will always be doubters, even when the evidence is presented to them.

The car goes for MOT today, and I have decided that this will be my last post on the matter. I intend to spend less time trying to help people, and more time enjoying my car.

Thank you all for your comments.

I for one would like to say thank you to the op.

I had no idea cat B write off`s could be put back on the road.

Also good luck with the car, you have no intention if selling it to make a profit,so whats the problem with negative posters...........

Cool, I guess you just need to tax the car and you have a cheap motor, and probably safer and more reliable than any of the 15 year old rust buckets on the road.

That's good I prefer to get Cat D's back on the road for less than half the price of an undamaged one. All I need to do is repair, MOT, tax and insure and bobs your uncle with no fannying around.
  • I suspect the OP got conned into buying a Cat B and lumbered with it and did this to save face. As said no one would want all the hassle to end up with a Cat B flood damaged car that will almost certainly fail in the future.
  • Hi OP. Just been reading this with interest.

I admire your perseverance with a car you undoubtedly enjoy driving. I drive a classic car and have spent more keeping it on the road than it'll ever be worth, if the insurance company had had it's way it would have been written off several times already! (and that's only in the time I've owned her). Please also bear in mind you're been very green. If you think how much energy it takes to produce a brand new car, it'd probably be enough to keep your car going for a great many years.

As my car has an occasional tendancy to be unreliable (especially after being caught in the 2007 floods, having caught fire, and been crashed :o ) I have been looking in to getting a cheap runaround so I can get to work when my starter motor finally packs up, or when she just refuses to start, or when it's -5 outside and my heating is jammed on cold. I've been offered a cat B write off. All MOT'd, taxed with VIC etc. My problem is finding an insurance company that will even speak to me for more than 2 minutes on the phone. I get as far as giving the reg, model and make, then I say that it's cat B and they say "I'm afraid we don't insure cat B."

I notice that, due to a few obnoxious posts, you're not willing to publicly post you're insurance company on the thread. Is there any chance you could PM me? Or if anyone else knows of a company, please could you PM me. It's a nice little car, but I don't want to go any further with it until I know I can get (and afford) the insurance on it.

Many thanks, and I hope you get many more years enjoyable driving out of your car.

You couldn't let me know who you got your insurance through, could you?

I've now found a company which will insure a Category B write off, so there is now nothing stopping me from buying the car and using it daily.
