ITV2,3and 4 HD have just been launched as subscription only. Will they be ad free?
It may be higher than the licence fee but it is our choice to pay that. the bbc don't give us the right to choose.0 -

That is correct. You can use it to watch any recorded shows on it eg DVDs videos, as long as you don't watch live TV.0

Obviously if you were doing the recording you would need a licence.0 -

you're also not allowed to watch anything that's been recorded 'as it's being shown'0 -
Terrestrially yes. By satellite no. If you live with reception to a terrestrial transmitter - great, you're in the minority!
My cousin just outside a small metropolitan area in Alabama can only receive ABC out of those channels you mentioned (plus PBS).
If she wants to get the others you mentioned, she has to stump up at least $30 a month for cable or satellite subscriptions. Even if she doesn't want to watch any of the cable exclusive channels. $30 a month. Good value for money for adverts every 8 minutes?

Did she try having a rooftop aerial installed? Where theres a will theres a way. You should see the size of some of the TV masts on houses in and around Dublin, 50 ft some of them. Installed so they can recieve free British TV from Wales. Point is there is usually some way of getting the signal if you are determined enough. Anywhere I have ever lived in the US its always been possible to get the TV on an indoor aerial anyway!0 -

No they really don't. they don't control tv ownership, and to own one does not mean you have to have a licence. Read a few previous posts or indeed your licence and you'll find out why.0 -
You can own any ammount of TVs and similar devices and do not require a TV if you do not watch live TV as it's being broadcast.
You can watch any ammount of Videos, DVDs, Catch-Up TV etc as you want.
It even looks like you can watch live TV over the Internet as long as it not being broadcast on conventional TV in the UK or the Channel Islands - see http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/0
