Is this asking to be burgled?

Options
I have to say i am very untrusting so need opinions on this:

dd will be starting secondary in Sept and although 95% of the time someone is here on the odd occasion (more so in the winter) someone may not be this gives her the option of letting herself in. We have a car port with a couple of alcoves which unless you walked up our drive you would never see that thing screwed to the wall..but i am wondering how safe they are..could someone see her one day and then smash it off the wall? safer than leaving under a plant pot etc but still has anyone got one? My friend cleans holiday homes and they use these on the side of the rd so are quite visable yet seem quite a good invite for a burglar..or is it just me?!!
Thanks

Can't she carry a spare key in a zipped part of her school bag?

I remember being given a key at that age.
  • Hi,

I would think it would be safe enough, why not just give her a key though, are you afraid she might lose it?

Or give a neighbour a spare key so she can go round and get it if you are out.

    Hi thanks for the replies.

Yes i could give her a spare key but thought this was easier..also we have a cleaner who we currently leave the key under the bin..now that is asking for trouble! As for neighbours i only really know/trust a couple and most of them are never here so may not be a good option!
Ill have a think thanks x

Come across them lots in my job, being a maintenance engineer some places I goto are way out in the sticks, so to avoid going to the offices of the places where im working they often have these key safes on the site where im going.

Instead of that if you dont want to leave keys why dont you get a code lock, they are a reasonable price now, got one on my back door for if ever I forget my keys then I can still get in.
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

my MIL has one of these fitted. This allowes her carers access to her home without her getting up to answer the door.

The local crime prevention officer suggested it

think you might need to use a bit of brute force, have a look at the link in first post and you will see a pic of how it is fitted to wall, though have you tried trying to find the code by turning the tumblers?

Asking for trouble is leaving a key under the bin ...and then announcing it on a public forum!!!

I don't get why can your daughter not have a key of her own? Keep on a keyring along with her school locker key. I was entrusted with my own front door key at the same age.

Key safes are only as good as the combination. Good for access to homes for the elderly/disabled (grandparents had one and old lady over the road has one) but can be opened given enough time. I'm not too sure where you would stand on insurance as if there are no signs of forced entry they might not pay out if you were burgled. If you install one it would be better to install it where it is visible..if it's out of view then someone trying to crack the combination has all the time in the world to try and crack it if they can't be seen. However i would entrust your daughter with the responsibility of having her own key.
