I grow my potatoes in old tyres I got from a well known tyre fitting place....I start off by planting two or three potatoes in one tyre that is fill with compost/soil and leave it till i get about 12 inches of green growth, then put another tyre on top of the first and cover the plants with soil, leaving about 1/2 to an inch out of the soil. When I get another 12 inches or so of growth, I repeat the process by putting on a third tyre and then just leave the plants to do their thing.....by putting another tyre and more soil on, it tricks the plants into thinking they havent grown and they grow some more, and we get more tatties lol......as far as buying seed potatoes - well i usually just use potatoes that have started sprouting from the ones I buy at the supermarket to eat.....some would discourage this (not sure why) but ive not had any problems.....if the potatoe you have as a few sprouts out of it, cut the potato in half or near enough, making sure both halves have some sprouts of their own... and plant!!!!!! anyway thats my way of doing things lol...either way - growing spuds is easy and rewarding - oh and this time of year, I would grow them in a greenhouse or shadehouse or under some kind of cover...... good luck :)
    'Normal' is a dryer setting.
  • Just thought I would pop in and say that we planted up four potato bags with christmas potatoes and they are growing like mad and are already about 8 inches tall! We are about to put some more soil around them as soon as the rain stops.

Hope everyone who is growing them is having the same luck.

    Am very excited!

  • I planted spuds at start of august, notied today they are starting to flower, cant see me having any for christmas as they will get eaten long before.:D
  • Well done.

Could you not take some of the potatoes produced and replant them so they will sprout and be ready around xmas?

I'm still trying to find a source of seed potatoes so I can get them planted for christmas :(
