Where did MoneySaving Diva get her's I wonder ???????????
Well I would like to say that I am a secret potato tsar with an underground network of spies clearing out garden centres of all their seed potatoes, but unfortunately I am not...:rotfl: I just happened to be very very lucky and got the last of the stock I guess. (From Dobies actually, a few weeks ago now)
And I think you misunderstood TabbyKitten hon, it is the Christmas potatoes that are chitting, the summer ones we had never grew a thing and just shrivelled up and gave up on me as I said in an earlier thread which is why we didn't plant them.:D
Will be planting them out tomorrow - weather permitting!
Thank you all for the advice etc.

I posted on one of the other potato threads that DT Browns had them, although they're not currently showing on the website, so would be worth giving them a call. Afraid I've thrown the catalogue away now so you'll have to either find the other thread with it on or do a google for it

I put my xmas spuds in the ground a couple of weeks ago and they're already sprouting about 4"-6" high. I earthed them all up yesterday, completely covering the greenery, and just read above that you don't need to do that  Will mine be ok?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Hi Chameleon,
It is me creating the confusion over earthing the potatoes or not. I always thought if you plant potatoes, you earth them up. The instructions with my potatoes says not to, don't know why.
I thought it may be to do with the limited time in the ground, instructions says potatoes must be removed from the ground by mid October-ish. Guess to avoid frost damage. Does that even make sense? Someone more knowledgeable must be able to enlighten us.
PS RHS website does not shed light on whether to earth up or not. All my books (all 5 of them:D ) says grow Christmas potatoes in pots or grow bags - no help there. The update on my Christmas potatoes - every pot now has wee shoots and leaves:j. Chameleon I have just re-read your post 4-6" shoots in a couple of weeks!!!!!!!!!!! I would not worry about the limited time Christmas potatoes are in the ground. Your potatoes will have plenty of time in the ground - your days are longer and warmer.0 -
Should I go out there today and gently scrape off all the earth then? Although looking at the rain falling at the moment, perhaps not! :rotfl:
I obviously haven't researched this properly as i wasn't aware they had to come out of the ground by October either  I was expecting to leave them in and take as needed like I do with the ones I have growing already. I'm not sure they'd even be ready to lift in October
Oh well, the only thing it will have cost me if it all goes wrong is a little time as these are the freebie Emerald Vales I got from DT Browns earlier this year. I have a feeling these are "earlies"? In which case, they might be ready sooner than my others were (mains)

Hope you managed to get some potatoes Lady hon!:rotfl:
Well we went out and planted some of our salad potatoes two days ago in four potato sacks as we have no open garden to plant them in. We have put four per bag and covered in a couple of inches of soil. We are going to put more soil in as they grow, as per the instructions. It says nothing about lifting in october so we are going to keep them out as long as we can. (the sacks have a drop down front panel so you can open and check on your crop as you go!)
I know we were a little late planting them - and they all had plenty of chits on them, but my OH works two jobs and getting time for us in the garden is hard!
Anyway, wish me luck!! My first attempt at growing potatoes.. the summer ones didn't even make it out into the garden before they shrivelled up like walnuts!
