Free Email account with POP3?

I want to change ISP, but before I do I would like to change my email address to a free ISP-independent email which allows POP3. Any advice welcome :)

    Why not buy a domain name (costs a couple of pounds for two years).

    Then use googlemail for email (free) and get forwarding.

    Then you could have the email address ...@yourdomain.com

    Yahoo does this, Hotmail (or whatever it's been rebranded to this month) does this now I think too, but GMail gets my vote, not for POP, but for IMAP. Look it up if you don't know what it is, but I find it far better for when you get your email in multiple locations/devices.

    No, Yahoo does not do POP3 for free, and YPOPS does not seem to
    work any more - so anyone got any other answers to my question?
    (i.e. I'm looking for a free email account with free POP3 and SMTP)

    PoP = point of presence, which the ISP has a seperate server just for mail
    isp.domain
    username@isp.doamin

    so you access your mail via
    mail.isp.domain
    to get to your user account you will need your username + password, but to send mail, you send via whoever internet you are using at the time .

    Okay - being up-front, I was hoping to propose a reliable solution for a friend who is not computer savvy. However it seems there are problems setting up POP3 and SMTP on Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail, and I am reluctant to propose anything that is unlikely to stay reliable.

    POP3=Post Office Protocol, version 3.

    I use POP3 with Gmail all the time and have never noticed any unreliability in the service. What problems in setting it up have you met?
