I never so this myself, always get hubby to do the chopping and it still affects me from next door. But I heard you can stick a piece of bread over your top lip and this absorbs the fumes before they hit your nose. It works, but I find it too uncomfortable.

I fine when I'm wearing my Contact Lenses I don't cry when chopping onions. As a result it is my job around November every year when I prepare all the onions for pickling for Christmas.
Sorry not much use if you don't wear contact lenses.

Can you not cut the onion up in a bowl of water, to stop crying?

This is drastic but since I had my laser eye surgery last year my eyes have never watered when cutting onions since!! Bizarre.

Thanks Agutka....hope no one walks in and catches me with the bread stuck on me face tho....:)

Andy...don't know if that would be possible under water...
I find it hard cutting them on the chopping board, but i'd try most things....

apart from laser eye surgery tho....thanks Boomdocker!

I cut them beside the sink with the cold tap running and never have any problems.

Lots more ideas to stop the tears on this older thread: In Tears...and its CQs fault

if you dont cut through the root end it will save most or the eye watering

ie, cut in half tip to root then slice down to but not into root then cut crossways to get diced onion

I put a teaspoon in my mouth and run the tap whilst chopping (but won't be running the tap anymore since I realised how precious water is). I think it works as you are concentrating on sucking the spoon rather than on the onions??

On the subject of onions, has anyone used one of those stainless steel bars that you wash your hands with to get rid of the smell? Do they work?
