I put a teaspoon in my mouth and run the tap whilst chopping (but won't be running the tap anymore since I realised how precious water is). I think it works as you are concentrating on sucking the spoon rather than on the onions??

On the subject of onions, has anyone used one of those stainless steel bars that you wash your hands with to get rid of the smell? Do they work?

I rub them on the taps

astonsmummy for a split second i thought you meant the onions!...

and i'm thinking this thread is getting very bizarre. :D
  • I read somewhere that if you stick your tongue out when cutting onions it stops you crying. I do that now and it works a treat.

I had just started cutting onions (nice fresh ones from the garden, so lots of potent fumes!!!!!) this morning, when I suddenly got reminded (by the state of my eyes) that I was doing it whilst wearing my glasses cos I hadn't put my lenses in yet:mad: :o

Can you not cut the onion up in a bowl of water, to stop crying?
You can, but then some of the flavour gets washed away in the water, and you also finish up with more dishes to wash because you need a collander or something to drain them. The only satisfactory solution I've found is borrowing my son's swimming goggles.
