I totally empathise with you 12month challenge where your OH is concerned. It took a long time for it to sink in to my OH that this is real and even now he ignores what is going on around him:mad: I too have various savings pots that are my secret stash and if he knew, they would be cleaned out and squandered:(
Stick to your guns and keep chipping away at your debt...it will all be worth it in the end;)
The years do pass so quickly and whilst you don't want to wish your life away, you do become impatient for the debt to be gone. That's one reason why I have broken my debt into smaller chunks and I concentrate on those rather than looking at the bigger picture.;)
Take care

Hi again Ellie
Things have really come to a head here with OH
Miserable s not the wordHes been drinking and causing rows with DD and DS on purpose.
I am starting to think he has some sort of mental health issue.
Going to be a rubbish Christmas
Anyway so sorry to be miserable on your inspiring diary. Just felt I needed to tell someone
Thank you for your words of support Ellie, enjoy your day.

So sorry to hear you are having problems 12 month challenge and I'm sorry I haven't replied to you before now:(
I think everyone handles debt very differently and I've come to the conclusion that sometimes OH's just drink and become stubborn as a coping mechanism. My OH is just the same:mad: he carried on spending on beer and cigs even when we didn't really have the money for those things. Eventually, I just had to say "No" (even that doesn't always work!) - he has at least given up buying cigs and now uses tobacco, this makes a huge difference but he still buys beer and disappears into the garden to drink them.
You can always vent on my diary if you need to, I know exactly where you are coming from:( There have been times when I have wanted to scream from the rooftops but instead just come on here and rant:o
I hope you can sort things out and I wish you the very best for the new year!
Take care

Here's to a (hopefully) debt free 2016!!
May all your dreams and wishes come true - I hope that in 1 year you will have your escape plan ready for 2017!!0 -
Hi again Ellie
No need to apologise for not replying
My OH pushed every boundary there was to push on the run up to Christmas. Things really came to a head here. After a huge ultimatum he never drank for about 2 days before Christmas. He had 2 beers with DS on Christmas day and has not touched a drop sinceHe has been like a new man.
He went to an appointment that he had booked (after pressure from me) at the local Free Alcohol Service. He had a long chat with them and was even given a free 3 month subscription to to leisure centre for the gym and swimming etc. Even had a bit of a laugh about him joining Zumba classes  That I would love to see :rotfl: This will continue as long as he keeps up with his progress and attends regular appointments etc.
He was told he is not physically addicted to alcohol he is addicted mentally.
Anyway I hope he sticks with it because we have actually been talking to each other about everyday things and not shouting and arguing about beer
Anyway enough about me :rotfl: Highjacked your diary, sorry
Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year and LOOK Ellie I am under the 30k :j
I have never been so motivated to get this debt down and gone :T
Thank you for your support and I hope all is well with you too

Thank you EE and a Happy New Year to you too;)
I've been reading your diary and things seem to be looking up for you and you are very determined. I hope 2016 is good to you.
My escape plan is coming together nicely so far:cool:. I need to knuckle down this year and clear all my remaining debt but I feel so motivated and my ultimate goal spurs me on;)

That in itself is a massive step forward for you and I hope it continues;)
My OH doesn't acknowledge that he has a problem which is the problem:mad: He drinks every day and doesn't think there is anything wrong with that. He hasn't earned a penny since September and doesn't even try to.
I used to get so angry but I don't let it bother me anymore, I've cut back the amount of money I give him and if he does earn any I don't take it so it gets spent on booze.
I'm lucky that I have a good job and can afford to pay all the bills and our DMP. I'm working hard to pay off my debts completely by the end of 2016 and then I have nothing to keep me here and can stroll off into the sunset:cool:
Anyway, enough of the doom and gloom...onwards and upwards:D
You are under 30k - you WILL get through this:)
I wish you all the very best for 2016
Take care

Hi again Ellie
I totally understand where your coming from... We both work but its me that ensures all the bills etc are paid. I too have to control the money otherwise we would have nothing if left to him..
You sound like you have your head screwed on and not letting your OH get the better of you. (good for you)
I also see how your are bringing your DFD forward. Way to go :j
I cant believe how addicted I am to paying down my debt. I want to give it all I have got in 2016. This time next year I want to be under the 20k mark.
You are doing so well dont let anything get you down. Heres to 2016 seeing you kick your remaining debt in the a!!e :T

I set myself various challenges throughout 2015 so thought I would have a look how I did and set some more for 2016 - here goes:
In 2015
I wanted to reduce my debt to 8k by the end of 2015 - I've just missed out on that and it's still over 9k but I'm not going to beat myself up about that, it's still under 10k which is less than I have owed in total for probably 25 years:eek:
I try to reach this elusive £1,000 in my emergency fund but never quite get there:p I'm still not there! I have £390 at the moment so I will try again for the umpteenth time this year:doh:
Next was bringing my debt free date closer - it's currently at February 2017 and I'm going to do my utmost to get this to December2016.
The clothes challenge was next and I was successful with this and kept under the £200. not sure I can do this again this year as most of my clothes are now well worn:o
I try to keep to 10 NSD per month and can do this most of the time:o
I saved £858 in the Saving for Christmas challenge. I'm feeling quite smug about that one:cool:
In 2016 I plan to:
Reduce my debt to ZERO by December 2016
Save £1k in my Emergency fund (one of these days I will do this!)
Try to have 12 NSD's per month.
Save £2 per day towards Christmas 2016 (I am now running this challenge and have saved £64 so far:cool:)
Have a look in my wardrobe and set myself a realistic clothes budget for the year based on how many threadbare clothes I now have:rotfl:
That will do for starters:D
Take care all

I think you did really well in 2015 and the 2016 challenges certainly look doable!!
Just wondering what your emergency fund gets used on?
Most 'emergencies' are foreseeable events so could you have other pots instead so (for instance) could you have a car repair fund, an appliance repair fund etc.
I know you would have to put money in each month so there would be less for the emergency pot but at least this way you wouldn't have to touch it when things need paying.
I am starting an EF/debt payoff fund this year as all but £100 of my debt is on 0% and that way I can actually get some interest.0
