You get used to it. It's never nice, but after a while you either let it wind you up or you learn to ignore it. I choose (mostly) to ignore it, and to pick my battles where I can make a difference.

It's great that you are happy with the life you've chosen, but please don't assume that what is right for you is right for everyone.

I don't tell anyone 'in real life' I'm on DLA, it's none of their business, but I don't feel stigmatised by it. DLA doesn't go anywhere near to covering the additional costs of my illnesses or disabilities. When I was first awarded HRM I saved up to buy a comfortable lightweight wheelchair, then once I had that I got a motability car. I don't get any care component at the moment (I am reapplying) so there is nothing to go towards all the other aids I need, or the extra washing because of the Crohn's, or the help I need around the house, etc.

I work part time, I wish I was well enough to work full time but I'm not at the moment. But I feel very lucky that despite my illnesses and my disability, I am managing to work and do most things I want to do.

    Thanks

Yes everybody is different. It seems that it is important to you to get out and about - you are very very lucky that you can and have no fears about it. I can only cope with being away from everybody. Of course it was hard at the start, letting go of all the support, but I just knew that if I didn't, I would remain the way I was for th erest of my life. Yes life now is OK, have got used to it and accept the limitations. Having DLA or even all the money in the world would not help me at all.

Working, yes I would love to, but can't, not in this condition

We now get Pension Credit and to be honest, we can actually save out of it!
With careful management it can be done - there are many that do!
    Andy and Flo

Well you of pensionable age then. Yes you can perfectly well live on that.

People on here are of working age and don't have the extra pension credit so they need the extra DLA,that you can do without, as youre on pension credits and therefore getting extra income that they wouldnt get.
With respect you can afford to have that pride but they would not survive without the help DLA provides.

Have they (and you) been assessed by Social Services ? s47 of the Community Care Act 1989 imposes a duty on the LA to undertake assessments of anyone who is referred to them. This could well help you obtain some respite care which is really important for you to be able to continue looking after them day in day out

Be very careful of social services. Many people have had to battle to get their children back after asking for respite. The people I know who have had social services involved dont get that help as SS say they havent got the resources. You will undergo assessments to see how you cope which may go against you. Also to have respite you need to sign forms that your children go into voluntary care. So its a legal process and the sws can decide that they need to be there longer.

I would manage without them. direct payments would be better but even they can be hard to get. Just use your benefits to help you

Ummm I think you may have your facts a little confused. Well if you call having £15.95 extra than I would have got in IS.

    IS
    Couple rate £102.75
Severe Disability Premium (one only) £53.65
    comes with HRC component
    Carer Premium £30.05
    £186.45
    PC
    £202.40

Out of that we save £30.00 per week for presents (birthdays/Christmas) for the children (4) grandchildren (9) and great grandchildren (2)

Having DLA at the rate I was on that I gave up would have been another £121.25 per week and premiums for the PC another £83.70.

On that basis I would be getting £407.35 per week. An absolute fortune!!! But pride and feeling independent is more important - well to me it is!

If we can manage on PC of £202.40 and save £30.00 out of it, I am sure that others can live on IS quite easilly.

We have extra costs because of my disability - those come out of our income!!
If we can't manage it one week we wait until we can.

SDP doesn't come with HRC. Well it does; but it also comes with MRC. You'd only get it if classed as living alone and no-one claims carers allowance for you.

What you are saying is you have enough to live on for your disability -well fine. Why if you are so proud do you claim SDP and carer premium then? SDP is like a disability living allowance anyway and why dont you feel stigma with that. I think you are just trying to make yourself feel superior to others who are sensible enough to take the DLA that helps them with their condition or prove some point. Its getting really silly.

No I don't claim anything for a disability - I was just showing that IS with SDP is only £16 pw less than what I get. And we manage despite everything!

If I did, then with PC and the disability premiums + DLA we would be on over £400 per week. There is no way that people need this sort of benefit income. I honestly couldn't justify it! No wonder the Welfare costs have rocketed - we should all be doing our bit to help out, not just thinking of ourselves

I dont understand all these abbreviations. Not all of us get all these extra benefits and know what these stand for.

What is hrc? what is IS and PC. I thought you weren't claiming income support!

DLA isn't income and many disabled people do have high costs.

You get more money than those on income support and SDP then. You obviously dont need it then if you are getting your pension. You do have a wife. Many people live on their own and would need to pay someone to help then which is why they need the DLA.
