DLA is not awarded because of the condition but how it affects the claimant on a day to day basis. You mention a large amount would have been paid had DLA been claimed but you can't possibly know if the DWP would decide whether he actually meets the conditions.

Very true, my Mum wouldn't know for sure unless she claimed, but going of what all the parents who attended this meeting say and what the diabetes nurse tells us, she is 99% sure my little brother would be entitled to DLA. These other children have their diabetes under better control than my brother, only require a 3 monthly check up due to having it under control, they go to school as normal, partake in all the usual activities that children do etc. This was discussed at length as obviously the kids are encouraged to live a perfectly normal live.

I'm not against people with disabilities claiming, but I now know for a fact that it does not cost these parents an extra 64 per week to care for their children, this money is being saved by these parents to fund their childs education, none of it, in this specific case, is being used to pay for any extra costs for the diabetes related condition. Sometimes its the health professionals that encourage people to claim. Or the parent might mention it and they get supporting letters

The diabetes nurse has encouraged my mum to claim in 2 months when she will be entitled to put in a claim, she has offered to help with the forms, obviously the nurse is just doing her job and being supportive. She did tell my mum to claim as soon as she is able as it will be a stronger case the earlier on we do it as his diabetes will still not be under control and he will be requiring more care.

Just a quick question, is DLA reviewed? Obviously he will have higher needs for the first 6 months or so, but after that he will be doing his own injections and controlling it himself, talking to the other children this is a realisitic timeframe and some of these children are younger than my brother.

DLA is reviewed every 2 years I think. Although my friend applied and he said it was 1 year now. he may be wrong but it was always 2 years. They send a fresh form to your address.

When you are awarded dla they will specify the length of the award - it may be anything from one year to indefinate - indefinate awards are subject to a check whenever the dwp decide - other claims will have a renewal request at the specified time when the award is due to end -

It depends on your award length. Some are 1, 2 3 years etc but some people get indefinite.

I have indefinite but that means that at any time after 1 year, I believe, that they can reveiw my claim. However the reason people get indefinite is usually because their condition is unlikely to get better for a very long time, will stay the same, or their condition will progressily get worse over time. I know someone who has been on indefinite since I've known him (they used to be life awards then but no longer are). His last reveiw was when he was 16 (to change him to an adult claim) and he is 21 now so that is 5 years so far and no reveiw.

They can also review your dla when you go for the dwp assessment.

My friend got lifetime award for DLA for having a mental illness. I have never seen her ill and she wants to work and has done voluntary work,so isnt bothered about the dla now.

Maybe in some cases they are basing DLA on the illness and not what you can do -which is the current thinking

My DLA is indefinite - however, I've asked them to revie it each year. My sight is getting worse, ditto mental health and stomach issues.

Hi mine was a 'for life' award made in 1995. I kept asking for it to be reviewed each year as I wanted to get off it.
