Not really. I still hve to pay for extra water whether I'm on benefits or not.

    It varies.

    1. If you were on benefits, the water company would help you out. If you are not on benefits, the water company would still try to work with you - ask them - unless you are on a damn good income.

    2. OK it varies - just give some examples what the extra costs are on average - in an average week.

How does it? DLA enables many people (including myself) to pay for the things we need.

Yes, but limited to the extra costs incurred relating to your disability. It is not there to top up your other income be it benefits or wages.

I have asked this already - could somebody give me some idea of what these extra costs are and how much do they cost in an average week.

The lady is question though isn't doing anything wrong or illegal though! That's the problem, I feel its immoral though - just my opinion. My brother has been living with diabetes for nearly a month now, and don't get me wrong, its a horrible condition to have. But there isn't anyway him having diabetes has cost an extra 240.00 (which is what my mum would have gotten so far for him if she claimed DLA) His medication is free, his diet hasn't changed dramatically, he still eats what the rest of the family has at mealtimes. My family were amazed that they could receive such a large sum of money which clearly in this situation is not needed. The money could never make up for him having this condition.

Hey thanks - just noticed why you have so much sense and see things that are wrong. You are from Lancashire.
One of my bretheren!! I am the only one in the family that escaped the border controls to come south!!

Hi I was just wondering if you have managed to get some figures together? I just can't see how you can justify your statements.
Maybe you can't so why not say so?

Why does it matter so much?

  • I really do hope that all the people who are so opposed to other's living a bearable existence on paltry sums of benefit that they NEVER have to try and get those benefits to which they think are unfairly given out, I know of a woman who was turned down for DLA because she was not disabled enough, she was in a wheelchair and suffered with numerous ailments, she had to fight for over eighteen months before she finally got her due benefit's, in that time she had lost her home and was in a huge amount of debt.

I am sure there are some people who defraud the system but the hoops the DWP make you go through to get these benefit's is criminal,I have a very close interest in the way in which the tests carried out by ATOS HEALTHCARE effect the sick and disabled, I even applied under the Freedom of Imformation Act to see the training manuals handed out to Atos Staff and the DWP people who would do the tests on people claiming these benefits, you should see some of the questions asked, it is utterly ridiculous and shameful that a government in modern day Britain should attack the weakest of our society, shame on Britain and the government, especially the Lib Dems, they have sold their souls just to have the chance of power.

If we don't support the sick and disabled then who or what will be the next target on the government's agenda, remember it could be your lifestyle and existence that is threatened soon, don't be too quick to make judgements on people and their lives before you walk in their shoes.....

And If the government wanted to really save money why are they paying ATOS HEALTHCARE 1 BILLION POUNDS FOR A TEN YEAR CONTRACT?????? Surely that 1 Billion could be better spent elsewhere??????? Rather than going into a private companies bank accounts????

Because you were the one that was bleating that you wouldn't be able to pay for your medication and extra water + everything else your disability cost you if you didn't have DLA. My comment was that - do you spend all of the DLA money that way. It should not be used to 'top up' your other income.

Just give an estimation to show that your DLA just covers or doesn't cover the extra costs. Quite simple really,

To be honest, I think that there is an amount of it that you use for everyday things, unconnected to your disability, which is not the reason it is paid to you.

Prove it then! All my DLA goes on disability related stuff.

    Well put!!!

I live and have lived on means tested benefits, but do find that you have to cut back. We manage OK. I have worked for 44 years (and yes worked - not working life) and thought it unfair as well. The trick I learned was not to get involved in what others did or got, but instead concentrate on living my own life.

Yes, I am still fighting to get ESA, despite having enough evidence that can sink a ship showing that I cannot work based on my illnesses. As I said before I gave up my DLA because it was holding me back from feeling 'normal'. I felt DLA gave me a tag 'oh that guy over there is not altogether with it, he gets a disability payment from the government, and that must prove it'

Ask your friend what it feels like to be in a wheelchair, and how the public view it?

They took so long to decide if they would pay my mortgage interest, which they declined to do at the end, that we walked out of our lovely home and handed the keys in. There was approx £100,000 of equity in it, but not being able to pay the mortgage, we had no choice. There were no arrears as we used all of our savings to pay the mortgage.
We now have a 1 bed rented flat, paid for by the council.

So yes life does change - you have to change with it.
