Please vote on the poll to shed some light on your circumstances and it would be much appreciated
Really quite intrigued given the difficulty in buying a property who does what (see poll)
I feel like i'm miles behind in life since some friends and acquaintences have purchased properties now and I haven't
(Voting is anonymous - also if you're fortunate enough to be in the position you already own your property outright then please don't vote since it will only make me more saddened that I don't even have a mortgage yet!!)

Bought a two bed flat earlier this year just before I turned 27. I feel I was 'late' too, which is strange because only 1 friend of mine bought before I did (at 18, with her then fiancee).
Looking back, I wish I had been more careful with money, and had more focus on saving.Emergency savings: 4600

What about owning a property outright?Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0

I bought my house when I was 23 (6 years ago so not that long) - at the time I thought I should get on the ladder as I was getting on a bit but now compared to my OH (who doesn't own this house or any other) and most of my friends I seem to be a bit of a rarity. The funny thing is, most of my friends don't seem as bothered about being 'on the ladder' even though they're nearly 30 as I was in my early 20's, maybe attitudes have changed along with the financial climate?2011: [STRIKE]Houses[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]weddings[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]cats[/STRIKE]

if a "typical" mortgage is for a 25 year term, then you do not have to worry about not being a mortgaged to the hilt home owner until you are at least 40 ,
and in reality, given your age and the impebding increase in returement ages to 70 +, probably not until at least 45 years old !0 -
2000 - bought tiny studio flat when I was 20 for £44k - cheapest place in the whole of oxfordshire at the time
2005 - sold flat for £92k and bought house for £140k (since remortgaged)
2009 - moved out of house and into rented with partner, but now renting my house out
So none of the options fit me really - I have a mortgage, but I am also renting. Now nearly 31.
Don't let age come into it though - far better to wait for when the time to buy for you is right than rush into something just because you feel you are "too old not to have a mortgage".0 -
I wouldn't worry about being behind. At 26 I'm married with a mortgage but I'm a student and thus occassionally feel behind my friends who managed to graduate at the 'right time' and now have proper jobs/careers.
Other friends are in their 40s and don't have a career or a house.
I also have friends who got married at 16 and 18 with kids.
I don't think there is a timeline of events which people follow in order to 'be on track', it's no longer a case that you're 'on the shelf' if you've not been married off with kids and a house at 21 (though a friend of mine's mother disagrees, much to her daughter's amusement).0 -
I don;t fit your options. I am over 30, own a house outright (no mortgage) but when we move will have a mortgage as we are getting a bigger house.
ETA: bought my house at 23 with parents' help (they lent me the deposit of around 30k) and still live there at age 35, but now married and moving hopefully in a month or so to a bigger house. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
