innocent people dont think its them that set alrm off. I wouldnt stop and if anyone put one finger on me they would be on the floor before they knew what happened. Security guards do not need to man handle anyone who is not trying to escape do they.

LOL yet the OP said himself that he didnt stop for them.........

And yes innocent people would stop, i stop all the time and i've never shoplifted in my life. Its not as if its a silent alarm.........there are sounds which are not of the norm. Any normal person - regardless how experienced they were with shops - would wonder why the alarm is going off.

I would rather be inconvenienced and prove my innocence than be awkward and be assumed to be guilty. And IMO the OP should have stopped........like any reasonable person would have. But if i were publicly embarassed after a security guard having to chase after me and grab my arm or whatever in order to get me to stop moving, i would take responsibility for this as a direct result of my own failure to act appropriately.

Different if the security guard punched me, as that wouldnt be reasonable. Just grabbing me in order to stop my progression i dont find unreasonable.

If I walked out a shop and the alarm went off and i never stopped and security came after me and grabbed me I would smack them there and then. ANYONE grabbing me anywhere would get the same regardless of who they are.

ianian99: Well, you'd be finding yourself in court for assault pretty rapidly then. Somebody literally touches you and you react by punching them to the ground isn't called self-defence or sticking up for your rights in any sense of the words!

Going back to the OP he seems to be saying he refused to stop TWICE (first with alarm, then when questioned) hence if also rushing away, I'm not surprised the way the security guards acted (what should they have done, is it the actions of a 'typical innocent party'?). Possibly over the top in how they physically handled him (who knows though, we weren't there, only the OP was) and thus grounds for complaint, but the whole incident seems to have come about from his own actions and attitude!

Mods: Time to close this thread/move to 'vents' perhaps?

I have stopped a couple of times and returned to the store (Tesco) only to have to search for a member of staff to check my bags:p However, a couple of months ago, I bought a small TV, which had the tape bound around it to prove it had been paid for, and a couple of bits and pieces. I was stopped by a security guard just after I left the store (no alarms) who asked to see my receipt for the TV.
Innocent I may have been, but boy, did I go a lovely shade of red trying to dig out a receipt while passers by were having a nosey to see what I had nicked! If I had been grabbed by anyone, I am afraid I would have been mortified...... (and yes, I know I am a wimp). An apology is in order here I think, no more, no less, just an acknowledgment that it could have been handled better.

I said if someone grabbed me not literally touches me.
Someone grabs you thats assault , I spark them and thats self defence.
It has happened to me before (not security guard, reporter) and I gave him a single punch in the face breaking his nose. Police said it was self defence.
As I said someone grabbing me out of the blue will get the same regardless of who or where

Why? I think there is interesting debate here about the rights of the OP.

Grabbing (not touching unless it's inappropriate touching)someone for no good reason is assault. So striking them to make your escape and stop them is defence, only if you continue to hurt them after neutralising the threat is it assault on your part.

Someone grabbing me will find themselves in a painful joint lock rather than me striking thme though.

They do if they refuse to stop....
