last week the ham I buy from A$da had gone up 20p in JUST ONE WEEK!! That's such a big jump! I find I am buying much more from the Whoopsie shelves. As for the ham, I am considering now buying a small ham and then slicing it up myself...does anyone else do this? What sort of ham / part of the ham would I need to buy?

Here's one of many threads about buying a ham to cook yourself.
It's one of the great OS foods - you get a good pan of stock for soup, lots of meat and you can then boil up the bones for more stock.
This thread has a bit of discussion about the best cut to buy, but there's more about cooking later on, and if you search OS for ham you'll find more recipes too.

It's only a game

Sorry to post again everyone, but I have just been checking out my shopping list again (I do it on the my supermarket website) as I wanted to see how much the ham hocks were and I just noticed that the price of the ham slices (the one I was complaining had gone up by 20p) has now gone DOWN by 21p so they're now 1p cheaper than they used to be!   Not complaining, though it's probably an error!!! Weird!

Think I am going to do the whole ham anyway....looks like much better value! :D

Lidl's ham joints are good value and taste nicer than Mr T's. They slice very well especially if you have an electric carving knife but I find it helps to wrap it in foil and put a plate on top with a weight on it while it cools. That helps it to keep its shape while it's cooling and it slices better
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I buy a value gammon joint and stick it in the slowcooker (on its own, but my mum adds cola to hers) and just let it cook for 8 hours or so.

Much nicer than ready sliced ham, but not sure how money saving it is really, as it's sooooo yummy we eat lots of big thick slices.

So the day started off really rubbish as I managed to upset my my DSIL . She sent me pics of her and my dear departed brother and I foolishly uploaded one of her onto my facebook page. Now I normally ask permission if it's ok to do this especially with kiddie pics so I dont know why I didn't ask *facepalm*

However everything is now sorted and we have spent most of the morning on the phone talking over old times and silly stuff.

DD Has now just phoned and the place where she works has just had a small fire in the laundry but everyone is safe.

Should I go back to bed? Just asking..........:rotfl:
Then God looked over all he had made, and said, "I can see idiots from my house".

Sequeena the kittens are gorgegous, aw i want a kitten *stamps foot* but my OH won't let me have anymore as we have two cats already. I've used those curry jars in the past, just make you wash them out properly, as for the lids i normally put the lids on and wrap electricians tape around. I've had for two years and its still fine.

Hester if you were closer i'd be banging on your door begging you to teach me!

Had to do a bit of essential shopping today has we ran out of god forbid tea and coffee . Nearly fainted this morning at the thought of no caffeine.
got the boys teachers some choccies, cheers home bargains, four big boxes of choocies at 89p each:T.

I don't tend to buy packets of nowadays as i find them too pricey. Instead i go to the deli and choose fomr there. Work out cheaper for me as its less packaging and the food doesn't go to waste.

Oh and loads of pilau rice yesterday, em we now enough for 5 separate meals of it. Place basmati rice in boiling hot water add loads of turmeric, so much so you cant see the rice. Add mustard seeds (or any other seeds), salt, pepper, chopped carrots and peas. As the rice cooks and soaks up the water and cooks the veg at the same time. Take about 25 mins to cook but its really nice.

Happy birthday seabright!

....things we don't have down here in the Home Counties - bargain stores, proper markets not 'antique and curio' ones, friendly people with time to be polite, and lots of free things to for families. I've worked out it'll cost approx half of what we'd pay for a south coast resort....
Try living here :( day trippers & ollerday makers think we are so lucky, when the truth is we can't get on our own beach for all of them, & the prices are in line with the easily accessible capital but local wages are not  No F4rmF00ds, H&B, 4ldi & many of the other cut-price outlets you are so fortunate to have north of Watford Gap ;) It may be less annoying if the locals were to get concessions on the car park if we did decide to go for a paddle but we don't get that! Our district council is a waste of space & that's before I begin on my pet grievance of criminal lack of adequate provision for special needs education bomb2.gif
....Jam jars, I save all mine throughout the year....
So did I  There's a thread on Special Occasions board for very good prezzie ideas that need a jam jar but The Offspring got knocky about them 'being in the way', so in a fit of pique I put all but the largest in the recycling. Literally three days later, No1 decided we need to screw lids under shelves & put things like curtain hooks, buttons, screws, etc in the jars to store them without taking up too much space :wall: [My case for chipping a chump with a chop is being heard next week & I'd welcome the support in the Public Gallery :p Bring your knitting as I've a feeling my motor-mouth will lead me to but at least I'll save on haircuts:rotfl:]

THIS is a thread about hampers & things & I've still got others for discussions about :santa2:, ham, making your own retro sweet boxes & all manner of things from way back so give me a shout. One idea I had with the folk giving a 'home cinema' style hamper, was to get those little dvd storage boxes you often see in QS & W!lkos as the 'basket'. It is an extra but practical gift SIZE=1]think you can put 10 films in there[/SIZE & saves you hunting around for a wicker alternative.

I hear you BigMummaF, I lived on the IoW as a child and the south coast for 9 years as an adult so have seen both sides. For me, the few but definite advantages of living one road back from the beach - being able to walk the dogs on the beach from Oct to March, listening to the sea, watching sea storms from our top lounge at night, the terrific feeling of cameraderie when the grockels went home and we had the place to ourselves again with a winter festival and so on. May not seem much but good to look forward to, and free. The greatest advantage of the summer was giving the locals work, really no contest. We were fortunate that there were two schools for children with special needs, but I understand they're not there now :(. I guess there's good and bad in everywhere one lives, if one wants to look for it...it's what we make of it
