naabanekeater - so sorry about our pup (((hugs)))

    Good news to report here!

DS2 has got the job!:j:j:j and DS1 is live on the radio atm and doing really well so hopefully he'll have a job too - dont uncross those fingers just yet though until we know for sure!

I'm with you all on my hatred of excess packaging:mad: I try and recycle as much of it as possible but you cant do that with it all.
    Do what you love :happyhear

  • Wow! What a thread!! I found it a couple of days ago while mooching around OS, and has taken me til now to catch up (although I must confess to skipping [STRIKE]a few[/STRIKE] 45 pages to get to the end :o )
Sadly I don't have much to add, as I am nowhere near as green or frugal as some of you :o but I will be following the thread for ideas on how to improve this ( I am thinking of trading the OH in for a bread maker or something useful - that will help!!)

I will just say that packaging is a pet peeve of mine too. I always put my fruit and veg loose in the trolley (will be attempting to grow my own next year:eek:) and get asked every week, without fail, if I want it put into a bag - no thank you! It takes us (two adults and a 3yr old) three weeks to fill our black rubbish bin.... but I have to 'steal' space in both my neighbours recycling bins as I can fill one a week :o What does that say about the amount of packing we have :o
Having a total re-think in terms of meal planning etc (and looking for a chest freezer from Freecycle :) )

Take care all, ((hugs)) to those having a bad day (me inc today!)

I wonder if I'm the only OSer who's a little tired of green this and eco that?

30º wash? Doesn't seem to do much for my washing. If you drop so much as a splash of grease on your clothes, have any 'biological' stains or grass/dirt marks, they are there to stay. Who has time to spot treat everything in a family wash?

Leave the car at home? Not if you have a load of shopping to drag a mile home and are past the first flush of menopause. It takes the rest of the day to recover and necessitates an extra shower. More water consumption.

Recycle - what exactly? I put stuff in the green recycle bin which I'm not sure should go in, because council leaflets and website differ. I have a dishwasher, which I use when it's full but I have to use additional hot water and detergent to wash out the recyclables. DS plonks stuff on the worktop if he's not sure where or what to recycle. I've moved the rubbish and recycling bins outside the kitchen door for convenience and the net effect is to make the kitchen look like a recycling station. The pot of peelings on the windowsill sits there most of the day, especially if it's raining, cos the two compost heaps are at the bottom of the garden, somewhere among the fallen apples and hundreds of wasps.
The garden this year has produced a lot of apples, most have been got at by insects but the best bits are in the freezer (more electricity) I had two week's worth of strawberries but the green veg has mostly been eaten by insects. Was it worth the gallons of water I poured on them every night?

It seems to me that life is all about balance. I do what I can, figuring that it is much better than doing nothing. If I slip up occasionally due to oversight or tiredness and eat out or throw away something I haven't eaten in time, I don't beat myself up, I remind myself that once it wouldn't have worried me.

My attitude to environmental issues is
Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.
  • To everyone who has had bad news - sorry to hear that (havent read past two pages yet),

Gailey - congratulations, your the second person today who has said they are expecting. my friend is 8 weeks with her second, only 3 of us know as at 12 weeks she will have a special scan to see if this baby has the same congenital problems as her son. Hopefully all will be well and the pregnancy can go on. She has split with her partner last week aswell.

Felt very down and lonely yesterday - boys drove me to tears, fed up that family dont visit so its me and the boys except on OH days off. Feel little better today fed up of feeling sorry for myself. Seen freinds. boys let of steam and were going the beach tomorow as the weather here is lovely. DS1 back on monday and Ds2 starts pre school in october - first time alone in 5 years!!
    Mum, wife and dinnerlady!

Oh NKB, how very sad for you. Having any pet pts is sad, but especially a puppy when you expect to have years with them. I hope your ds is better soon.

Kezlou sorry to hear about your bereavment.

Lambanana I am not surprised you feel low; I hope you are feeling more lively soon.

    Welcome Sarahneedle.

Gailey glad you are ok, congratulations on your pregnancy and don't let anyone but a damper on it - a new baby should be a cause for celebration.

Mavis Hen is miserable on her own - she has hardly squawked all day and usually she 'sings' long and loud .... I will hopefully be getting her two new friends in the next couple of days so she shouldn't be on her own for long. I feel so sorry for her though, she looks so lost by herself.

Just having another cup of tea and then I am going to see if my sacks of potatoes are ready to harvest; the first earlies came to nothing so here's hoping the maincrops will have done better.

    Congrats Gailey,

I agree schools should all be the same, we were late with my DS6 to school yesterday as his school had gone back a day earlier than the others in the area - and we had not had a list of dates. Seems to me that it takes forever for reception to start a full day too, this must surely come as a shock to the kids when they eventually get a full day of school. My DD4 will be two weeks before she gets to stay for lunch ime, and three weeks till she has a full school day. How parents who are working manage I do not know.
