Dogs have eaten some red onion...

My dog and my mums dog (both cavaliers around 9 months old) have pinched half a tuna sandwich that had red onion on it, I rang the vets as I know onions can be toxic and they've advised to take them down and it'll cost around £200 (she said this before she realised there are two of them so i'm assuming it would be £400) to make them sick and give them something to absorb the onions or something.
Now I will pay whatever needs paying if my dogs need it but this seems like a major over reaction? If they'd eaten a bag of onions I could maybe understand but it such a small amount?
Has anybody elses dog eaten onion and been poorly? I told them how much onion they'd eaten, it was less than a quarter of an onion between them i'd say.
**the vets have just rung back and said she does think the poison place (sure it's got a proper name) are being a bit over cautious and she's given me the number of the out of hours vets in case we need it**

Mutt's eaten onion and not been poorly - I didn't realise dogs weren't meant to have them, so she's finished off my spag bol complete with onions many a time.
TBH, in my inexpert opinion half a sandwich between the two of them really isn't a lot, if it were me I'd go for monitoring them and phoning the out of hours vet if you think you need to, especially as the vets have phoned back and suggested something similar. Unless the dogs age makes a difference? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
my mums sheltie's used to eat raw onion without any effect whatsoever, i would just keep an eye on them for 24 hours if you are worried, but i would need some signs of illness before i handed over hundreds of pounds to a vet0

Thanks, i'm not sure about the age, they do eat all sorts of carp though and aren't poorly.
I think I over reacted initially by ringing the vets, I just freaked out a little bit.
They're play fighting as usual now so them seem fine at the moment. I'll keep a close eye on them though. Think happy & you'll be happy

Well that's my thinking, it's such a lot of money and they'll probably be fine. I could ring our vet and say he's just sneezed and they'd say take him down. :rotfl::heart: Think happy & you'll be happy

Our pooch ate raw and cooked onion a few times before I learned they are toxic. He just got a runny tum, that's all. No more onions.£2 Savers Club 2011 (putting towards a deposit
) - £588

Have to agree with elsien - half a sandwich is not a great amount - I would just keep a close eye on them.
Was the onion in big thick slices or just bits mixed into the tuna? My dogs also eat leftovers of mine with onion in and have had no problems.
Your vets want £200 to make them sick??:eek::eek::eek: They're having a laugh!! Are you sure you heard that correctly?"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718

I'm surprised mutt's still on this earth the amount of toxic food she's shovelled down over the years -I found out 12 month ago that mum had been getting her tablets down her by putting them in grapes. All mum said was "but she likes them."
Although she's a solid dog, so it'd take more to make her ill than a smaller slightly more delicate animal. It's all in proportion really when you start panicking. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

the effect onions has is cumulative, so a lot of onions in one go, or many many smaller portions over a period of time may have an effect (they cause anemia) but a few slivers in a 1/4 of a sandwich is not going to have a huge effect on a pup. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

I think the amount is too small to be worried about - when I was on holiday a couple of years ago with Badger, we left her in the caravan we were staying in, and returned later in the evening to find most of a large bar of green and blacks dark chocolate had vanished... the dog looked quite pleased with herself, and a quick check of her bed revealed she was lying on the empty wrapper... she had managed to get onto the table, via the settee and steal the chocolate - this was a surprise to me, cos she is generally pretty good (and short, so cant reach much!)
I must admit, I panicked and tried to make the dog sick - whilst instructing a friend to find an emergency vets number, I took the dog outside and tried a combination of sticking my fingers down her throat, and a sort of heimlich manouvre.. it quickly became apparent that is wasnt working, and was just confusing the dog, who clearly thought I had lost the plot. (Sorry Badger - surprisingly she still likes me!)
When I got hold of a vet, she asked how much chocolate she had eaten, and how much she weighed, and said she should be ok, but just to keep an eye on her overnight - she slept on my bed, and was fine... but, I think it is entirely sensible to talk to the vet - only they really know how much of something is toxic and what to do about it...0 -
my dogs have eaten leftover spag bol and sheps pie and also eaten chocolate that the kids share with them and have been fine
my dogs are on you like a rash if you open a bar of choc and spend the whole time droolingIf you want to see the rainbow ,you gotta put up with some rain0
