Its a funny thing - 'to save the hassle i used a travel agent' - The problem is that most people who had hassle, used a travel agent.

I wonder if all the people who did DIY in april when the ash cloud first struck were saying that.

My recollection is that most of them were. :) In most cases people were frustrated that their TA wasn't doing enough...at least the DIYers were able to contact the airlines themselves rather than having to (or assuming they had to) go through a 3rd party.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

In my personal opinion as i was in the Dominican at the time, it was the tour operators that weren't doing enough not the actual travel agents in this country, although you do always get a bad one in every industry.

Until she comes back and tells us what it says on her paperwork we won't know for sure but if her paperwork said 7 nights, then yes, she did pay for it.

Most package holidays are 7 nights, not 6, so if her paperwork says it's a 7 night holiday she's been diddled.

the paperwork doesnt mention number of nights anywhere, it just gives the departure and arrival dates. i agree with all the comments that its my own fault, but when a TA asks me how long i want to go away for and i say a week, i just assume im gonna get 7 full nights

see this is where i get confused. it was a package holiday, and their number of nights are usually set in stone, ie 3, 5, 7, 14 - so where the 6 nights has come from ive no idea

oh well, you live and learn
