Slightly concerned as to why you are still on SP1 more than a year after SP2 was released. Refer to post #13 to produce a Hijack This Log.0

It has 2 x 512MB RAM. You can check by using your keyboard to select (Flying Windows Key + Pause Break) Whilst holding the first one down press the second.
It's not really adequate for Vista Home Premium. 2 GB is more realistic. But unfortunately a little expensive given the configuration.

You're right (not that I doubted). Is this adequate as we only really use the laptop for the internet and a bit of excel; The 10 year old desktop is quicker.0 -

If you don't have anything of importance on the laptop, maybe you can restore to factory settings and update immediately.. Have you Recovery Discs?
Back up anything you wish to keep before proceeding.
Adding the RAM will bring it up to speed. 1GB together Vista Home Premium and Celeron single core is a recipe for sloth.0 -
Hijack This showed nothing.
next step is backup and restore to factory setting. Sheesh!
Thanks for the help so far. I've learned a lot
PS still won't update, quotes error code 80240016 and reckons windows is already busy installing updates.0 -
Hi,
I had a similar problem to you for the last week.I contacted microsoft support by email from this web page https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?st=1&as=1&as=1&tzone=-60&gprid=14019×tmp=634136756895981466&ps=1&acty=ProductList&ctl=productlist&wf=PID&trl=PID%7eProductList&c=SMC&ln=en-gb&prid=13193&gsaid=598988
They gave me instructions on what to do and if that didn't work he then gave me more things to try.In the end i had to restore my computer to the last time i had backed it up.After that my laptop installed all the updates except for one. So they sent me a link to install the update manually, Since this i have had no problems.0 -
Thanks jessmist; did you work out why your laptop did this?0

This is what microsoft told me.
This issue can be caused by one of the following factors:
1. The Windows Update components are not working properly.
2. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupt.
They will probably give you a few things to try and if that doesn't work then you might have to restore your laptop to its original settings or repair windows but they will explain how to do this,But i had done a system image backup a few weeks ago so i was able to use this so i did not loose anything that was installed on my laptop.
I found the level of help excellent.0 -
you could try running sfc /scannow from admin level command prompt, this will check for any system file problemsFriendly greeting!0
