New Black Car - Marked it rubbing bird droppings off grrr!

Options
Hi All

Firsrt of all please don't post saying I'm stupid. I know that - thanks! :p

Drive is under a bunch of trees. I noticed a load of bird droppings on the bonnet so got a sponge with some fairy liquid and gave it a real good rub to try and get it off...

Firstly, it didn't get it off.. so that failed. secondly, now my car around the bird dropping area is all grey rather than metallic black from where I was scrubbing I guess...

Not good..! Took the car to a car wash - bird dropping still there, and mark also..

Any ideas/comments would be great... The MSE way as well if possible :)

Birdsh*t can attack pantwork if left to dry, and can also be abrasive, as you have discovered. Best way to remove it is with water, and lots of it, to soften the mess and then wash it away without scratching the paintwork. Is the grey area you refer to the undercoat showing through? If it is, you may want to contact someone like 'Chips Away' who specialise in small area repair techniques (SMART).

  • Thanks adouglasmhor, I realise that now ;) *hits self*

I got a hand mit type car wash thing so will try using that with a load of water tonight and seeing what I can do...

Im not sure if the grey area is undercoating... Would something like T-cut cover it up?

If you have managed to expose undercoat by washing with anything other than paint thinners I would be going back to car main dealer/ manufacturer, more likely you have dulled the top coat making it look grey. T-cut would be the answer but if you don't really know what your doing then you might make it worse and rub off more than the grey bloom that you have now. Go to a garage with a body shop and ask their advise you never know if it's just needing a polish they might do it for you.;)

Best to get an old wet sponge first and leave it on the birdshït for a while to let it dry. The grey area may just be a discoloration in the lacquer in which case t-cut will help if you know just how to do it. If you need something from the house to clean paintwork dissolve some biological washing powder in some water no corrosive salts though can be streaky if you don’t rinse well.

  • Might be worth placing an old soaked towel on the muck for a few hours to really soften things up before getting to grips.

Neighbours still laugh when I cover the birdlime (lovely non-offensive word) with soaked squares of kitchen roll. An hour later, gently swirl off with more water.
If the paint has went grey however, I'd get the local paintshop to have a look, as it sounds like you've went through the laquer coat into the colour coat.

I've taken some pictures of the damage.. bought some t-cut at lunch and plan to apply just a bit to a small part of the damage to see if it works.. or I'll call chipsaway and get a quote if that's better to do?

The car is metallic black.. Grey sky and clouds make it look a bit strange but bear that in mind :)

Very, very bad for your car...

Edit.... Jeeeeeezus, did you let rip with a scouring pad on that thing?

And judging by how stuck on that poo is, im guessing you clean the car with washing up liquid on a regular basis?

You need to use hot water to get the poo off with a soft cloth, using a good cutting agent to remove the scratches, then polish the whole car with a good wax polish (Autoglym or something) so that the bird poo never sticks to the car like that again.

Hey Strider... It was the first time Ive ever used washing up liquid on the car and it was only on that small bit. It was just a sponge I used but I did scrub hard I guess :(

Will use t-cut to remove the scratches and polish the whole thing at the weekend after a good hand wash...

This is what I get for having a drive under a load of trees! Bought a car cover yesterday too :)
