BLue Badge

I had an Aortic Anurism some eight years ago, and have had difficulty walking since the op. I have tried three times (and appealed) to be awarded a Blue Badge, and at last after all this time been awarded a badge. The badges are not given out like sweets, you have to show VERY GOOD reasons for needing such. What annoys myself is that you have certain small element of people that just park where they find an empty space close to the Supermarket door, which are marked for Blue Badge holders. The same goes for Child spaces in Car Parks.

you might of read my other post on this issue nd know my views on this . the question that needs to be asked is if people need wider spaces and dropped curbs ? as people in chairs need.
a good system could be a colour coded one i.e blue badge for elderly or painful walkers, in normal width spaces then maybe red badges for wheelchair users ONLY!who need wide spaces and dropped curbs. it doesnt matter to me if these are close to the shops or not as long as i can get out of my car into my chair

In theory this is a good idea, but what category do I fit in? I only use a wheelchair if I'm going to be on my feet for a long time and rely mainly on my crutches; however I need a wider space due to a mobility problem that affects my ability to bend my knee. To get out of a car with a straight leg, you have to be able to open to door all the way and hoik your leg over the top of it (I know it's not pretty!). On my crutches I can't walk far, but i CAN pop into a shop to pick up milk provided I can park and get out of the car!

I do agree with the blue badge issue - I went to physio at the hospital the other day and there were no blue badge spaces left (yes, it was raining!).

Seriously though, I wish supermarkets and shopping centres would enforce their own rules. At my local ASDA they threaten a £60 'fine' but nobody ever gets done. I want to start seeing clampers on non BB holders.

Perhaps we could somehow 'disable' people who park there without a badge, a hammer and a few nails would do it. I AM JOKING OF COURSE! :D

As "disabled" and "parent & child" parking spaces have no legal standing in private car parks there will always be those who are less considerate and do not take into account the needs of others.

The supermarkets, or the PPCs, cannot fine you.

Only give you little bits of paper which mean nothing.

Of course providing spaces for BB holders only is discriminatory against those who are disabled but do not have a blue badge, and falls foul of DDA legislation.

So why don't local councils have to do it? All council maintained disabled parking spaces are for blue badge holders only or they issue an enforceable fine.

If they provide spaces for people with disabilities they should be for all people with disabilities, not just those with blue badges.

Just because they "should" doesn't mean they "do"
