LPG(Calor) gas is also very expensive and you are at the mercy of the supplier.
No longer true. It is now possible to change LPG supplier with no financial penalty. (It's just been deregulated). You should be paying about 35p a litre for LPG. Currently it is slightly cheaper than oil overall, it is a lot cheaper per litre and gas boilers are a bit more efficient but against that oil produces more kW per litre. There isn't much in it, maybe 5%. Traditionally oil has been cheaper but that will likely not be the case going forward as it will be hit by green taxes, oil prices fluctuate more than other fuels, which can be seen as good or bad. After that Economy 7 is about 8% more than LPG but of course you have issues about how to get heat for the other 17 hours a day.
The answer to all fuel costs is simply use less, very few UK houses are insulated to the standard that they could or should be.0 -
these only cost about £600 to buy not sure how much to install, not much I should think0

Electric boilers running on daytime electricity are the most expensive form of heating available.
Regarding the electric boilers on the earlier post a 11Kw thermaflow boiler is around £2500 to purchase plus installation costs similar to domestic Gas central heating system. You may be referring to an Heatrae Sadia Amptec 12Kw electric boiler which is around £600.
Heard horror story from Client on Friday regarding this system where he inherited this system in a new property was on E7 Tariff and had bills of over £1200.00 one quarter. This was I stress due to the wrong tariff for the system but it is not the first time I have heard of and seen this.
At this moment in time Gas is the price winner however any fuel supply that we do not control the production of will continue to get really expensive over the next few years.
Whatever your moral beliefs when we switch to Nuclear produced electric we will get the same price benefits as our European Friends, as will not be on the end of a long pipeline through Europe (Gas) or imported Oil supply controlled by outside parties0 -
Im a bit concerned about gas, if you look into the future electricity is becoming increasingly more advanced. Think about it, how much gas do we have left?
then think are we capable of producing more electricity at lower prices?
and sudenly you find out that gas is very likely to get lesser and more expensive
while electricity might be opossite. So i think that propely insulating a house and buying a very economical electric boiler is the way forward.

Oh and by the way storage heaters!! huh you know that night time electricity is becoming more expensive! savings will become smaller and smaller.0

About mercy lpg suplier im fairly sure you can change supplier without much fuss, but be warned theil probably do the same! so beter use a ground source pump however the cost is astronomical! so if you cant afford it try putting plenty of insulation get a high efficiency electric boiler get a cheap supplier on uswitch.com and hey presto!0

Just a little bit off subject but, if it feasable for you to have a wood burning stove ? This is a cheaper, greener, alternative and it can also be linked up to a central heating sytem and/or heat storage medium in which any heat generated by your fire can be stored and used later.
I have installed a few of these systems and I think it is brilliant.0 -
This thread is over 4 years old, if the OP has not picked a heating system by now then he has probably frozen to death! No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Due to the recent price rises in both Gas and electric (particularly in Gas) I'm thinking about switching to an electric boiler. I need a new boiler anyway and Gas will get increasingly expensive due to increasing costs to obtain it.
Does anyone actually know the true cost difference between heating your home and water with Gas Vs Electric in 2011 prices and projected Gas and electric prices for the next 10 years?0 -
And what do you think is the main fuel used to generate electricity in the UK?
Electric heating is around 3 times more expensive per kWh, although the efficiency of electric heating is of course higher.
And no one has a clue what prices will be in 6 months, let alone 10 years. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
