You can have good haircuts done very cheaply at colleges with hairdressing departments and JCP have funds for interview clothing (although everything Dean worse seemed to be branded so he could presumably have bought more suitable clothes if he'd wanted).
There is a great deal of help IRL if people ask for it, prioritise their spending and keep a positive attitude.
I am really really not trying to be difficult but where is the help ?
The tax credit people can't help me
JSA /DWP can't give me anything and will not help me
Council will not help me
CCCS have done a good SOA but that does not really help the problem as all it shows is that I am £470 short per month so there is not even enough for a cheap hair cut. I have a NHS dentist thank the gods but even with that I have to pay something and with not spare cash where does that come from?
Who else can I ask for help ? I have even tried my MP with no luck.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

What a load of rubbish!
I actually found this programme offensive. Ironic that it was a TV programme, most likely made with a staff of freelancers, who have been struggling in the Industry to earn their keep.
The whole idea that everyone who is unemployed relishes a life of benefits annoys the crap out of me:mad:0 -
Did anyone watch C4's Fairy Jobmother last night?
What a load of rubbish!
This programme will only satisfy the many who have never been unemployed by confirming their belief that it is easy to get a job.
So - a relatively long term unemployed lad managed to get an interview straight away with an immediate offer of a job. Of course, the TV programme would not have had anything to do with that!
That programme must have infuriated the many people looking for a job in the Teesside area when an ill thought out TV programme made it look so easy.
Some of the programme did offer sound advice, but what annoyed me that because of a TV documentary, it is likely this lad got preferential treatment which would have disappointed the many others who would have relished the opportunity of this role, although I hope he does well in his new position.
So there it is then, it is so easy to get a job in Teesside -I suspect the locals will disagree.
Of course the other look is that many "job seekers" are actually chancers who don't want a job or arent good enough and simply want to cry on about unemployment whilst sitting on their !!!!!! every day raking in benefits rather than improving their CV's and walking streets for jobs0 -

Oh and the man from the debt company..
I am sure they could have produced a programme that related to the 'real world' of unemployment.
Yes, there are many who just will not work, but the programme would have been better if devoted to the realistic challenges of unemployment - and not just for the young although I hope any further programmes will 'deal' with older unemployed people.
Detailed tips and advice on obtaining work in a region that has suffered more than most in job losses and lack of investment would be better than 'fast tracking' someone into a job to make it seem easy.
Oh - and a good point about the debt collector. Why did they just not put a big sign on the old man stating "I am a debt collector carrying bundles of cash in my bag in a deprived area - please mug me"
Like the rest of the programme, not much thought went into it.Of course the other look is that many "job seekers" are actually chancers who don't want a job or arent good enough and simply want to cry on about unemployment whilst sitting on their !!!!!! every day raking in benefits rather than improving their CV's and walking streets for jobs
Which is a very valid point but I still don't think this programme gave a true representation of how difficult the job market is.
They made it look relatively simple by somehow getting the lad an interview and a job after a short period of 'applying' although it would seem the TV company did the job search - that is not the real world I'm afraid as many on these forums will testify.0 -

I don't know your situation but you really cannot expect the benefit system to help you with paying off debts. If you didn't have debts you could afford a cheap haircut, contribution to dentistry and interview clothes; you cannot expect anyone to help you make up the shortfall I'm afraid.
Edit: This came across more unsympathetic then I intended. I'm sure you're in a difficult situation and I'm sorry about that but it's really not the fault of the benefit system. What were you hoping that your MP would do for you?0 -
Was watching a political programme with Frank Fields the other night and he was hoping to get the Future jobs fund retained so that unemployed people would be offered a job subsidised by the tax payer to get them off benefits as opposed to give unemployed people help to fill in forms, do CV's etc. Seems a fair point as it is the process of finding the job that many people find difficult as they don't have the admin IT skills.
The ones that really annoy me are the "single mums" living with a working partner and there are a massive number in that situation. Gives the genuine single mums who genuinely struggle financially a bad name.0 -

This has nothing to do with my debts, the figure of £470 is not with anything else included. That is for council tax, mortgage, electric/gas, water, food and the car for hubby to get to work.
we lost 1k per month overnight so it is not like we built up debt never expecting to pay it back. I have worked but due to some wonder of modern rules based on tax years I do not qualify for anything.
That has nothing to do with paying my debts back that is about living pure and simple.
I don't expect anyone to pay my debts but do expect what I worked for.
I am not able to pay for a haircut debts or not as the amount I am short is nothing to do with that.
I was hoping that my MP could help me get my mortgage company to talk to me about the homeowners support scheme but guess I was wrong.
I really can't see anyway around it and there is no support or help.
Or to put it another way
Income: 1199.94 per month
Mortgage:741.00 per month
Gas:45.00
Electric:45.00
Water:25.00
Petrol :100.00
council tax :94.00
TV,Broadband,phone:22.00
Insurance:54.00
So all that comes to £1126
£73 left to buy food for a month, dentist, life insurance, pet food, etc etc
See the problem I am having, and no where does the debt come into it.
Sorry I think I also sound harsher then I mean but it annoyed me when you thought I was after money from the state to pay off what I owe.
Oh and don't forget that I still have to get to sign on twice a month with no money to pay for that either.
I worked from 11.02.08 at the same place but as the JSA is taking tax year ending 05.04.08 and 05.04.09 I get nothing even though we are now in tax year 2010-2011
So to my mind it should be 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 as my tax years thus giving me all the Class 1 I need.
Does that explain why I am so annoyed with it all ?There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;

one thing you really have to do is make it a job, not 6 months then it's over. Offer companies 6 months of wages in return for employing a long term unemployed for at least 12 months or something?
As it stands I have a FJF job at the moment and when it ends they can't afford to keep me, but not being able to afford the employee was a condition of them having me. I had no chance of staying on in this position from starting.
I do get 6 months on my CV, but I've worked with these people they like me and I'm good at what I do. I already had experience (redundancy) what I needed was something more like a work trial but with a guarentee and reasonable wage on both sides.Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.0 -

I apologise if I misunderstood your situation, however the qualifying dates for NIC contributions have always been much like this.
Good luck with your job hunting.0 -
However the web site states:
How it worksThere are two types of Jobseeker's Allowance, 'contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance' and 'income-based Jobseeker's Allowance'.
Contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance
Jobcentre Plus can pay this for up to 182 days. It’s based on how much National Insurance you have paid in the last two tax years. Generally, self-employed contributions will not help you qualify for contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.
Paid in the last two years..We are in the financial year 2010-2011 so it should then be 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 giving my enough Class 1
That is how HMRC work their years and how 99% of the world do it.. from 01.04.08-31.03.09
That is what I am having an issue with.
No one can explain why they are using different years to everyone else. Another question for the MP I hope as I do not understand it.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
