Fairy Job Mother

Did anyone watch C4's Fairy Jobmother last night?

What a load of rubbish!

This programme will only satisfy the many who have never been unemployed by confirming their belief that it is easy to get a job.

So - a relatively long term unemployed lad managed to get an interview straight away with an immediate offer of a job. Of course, the TV programme would not have had anything to do with that!

That programme must have infuriated the many people looking for a job in the Teesside area when an ill thought out TV programme made it look so easy.

Some of the programme did offer sound advice, but what annoyed me that because of a TV documentary, it is likely this lad got preferential treatment which would have disappointed the many others who would have relished the opportunity of this role, although I hope he does well in his new position.

So there it is then, it is so easy to get a job in Teesside -I suspect the locals will disagree.

Personally I thought the program was a load of gumpf.
It was easy for the lad to get a job once they had paid for his teeth to be fixed and for his new suit and found him the interview and made sure that a camera went with him so that the employer felt put under pressure.

He did not get the interview for himself and did not seem to fill in countless applications and send of CV's to everyone, he did not approach any local companies for work or look at retraining, so why should he get an interview he did not work for or earn ?

Back in the real world people are spending hours a day filling in application forms, applying online for jobs, joining agencies and canvasing the area. I might be feeling somewhat annoyed at the moment about my not getting any benefit at all but I have to sign on out of my own pocket when I have nothing coming in just to keep my contributions to date and I have to look for work alone with what I have available to me and I still manage 3 plus applications a day.
I can't afford a new suit and can not afford to have my hair cut etc so it is easy when someone does everything for you.

I wish the lad and his girlfriend all the best and hope the job works for him but I don't agree with the program and would like to see her work with someone who has REALLY tried.

Now, let me talk hypothetically for a while...

IF such sweeping insults were deemed quite unintelligent and were the opinions of all employed people. Then the entire workforce would be unintelligent. So IF each employed person gave their job to an unemployed person the workforce would become more intelligent then maybe the workforce would be more efficient and there would be no recession or job shortages.

Shall we avoid four-adjective generalisations from now on?

The point of the programme is not the help for the individuals shown but the information it would give to others in the same situation. Although people here may understand the way things work there are many who don't and the hints and tips shown could be invaluable for them.

Older : What hints and tips where there ? I am sure I missed that as I don't remember anything helpful other then her doing all the work.
Oh and the man from the debt company..

Interview tips about the importance of presentation, attitude and preparation. I doubt whether anyone would have given Dean a job looking and presenting himself the way he was first shown.

I also think that suggesting self employment to the girl was beneficial and generally the need to get structure back into your life after a period of unemployment.

I had not thought about that, so yes point taken.

But it is easy to look good if someone pays for it, they got his teeth done and her hair etc most can not afford that. My husband is now missing more teeth then he has ( problems as a child) He has to pay to get them done himself and as we are missing my wage now we have to find the money from somewhere when it is not there.
My hair needs cut but I can not afford that so maybe I don't look my best at interviews either but can't see anyone helping me.
I could do with a good interview suit as I have not been in that position for years I don't have the right gear to hand but again can't afford it.

I still think the show did to much for them and that is not how anyone else is going to find the job market so although there might have been some good advise it might still not help anyone else.

Do you see what I mean ?

I'm sure that his teeth were paid for by the TV programme but Dean did say he hadn't had them done before because of fear and, on a low income like theirs, they wouldn't have to pay most dental costs.

You can have good haircuts done very cheaply at colleges with hairdressing departments and JCP have funds for interview clothing (although everything Dean worse seemed to be branded so he could presumably have bought more suitable clothes if he'd wanted).

There is a great deal of help IRL if people ask for it, prioritise their spending and keep a positive attitude.

I think the best thing about the programme was the way that she showed them they would be a LOT better off if they worked, and also that they had to get a handle on their debts as that was the thing that was keeping them from succeeding with anything in life.
Once they realised that they had no idea what money came into the house each week, that they should have had £35 a week "spends" but they reckoned it was 35p ...
Getting Maxine to realise her self-worth was another huge thing, she blossomed in the Boots placement and it made her realise that she could do it - I honestly think she'd have got on & made an effort to look for a job if the fairy jobmother hadn't been there!
Dean was a bit of a typical "lad" - but even he relaised by the end that a few changes to his expressions ("nice one!") gave him more chance of a job & that getting a job would make life more settled for all of them had to be a good thing ...

I want to see the follow up though - did they stick at the jobs?

I recorded it. From the description above I'd don't think I'll bother watching it as it sounds too much like reality tv guff!
