Hi, just had the free eye test with optical express but they refused to let me have a copy of my perscription unless I bought a pair of glasses. Can they do this?
Thanks!0 -
No, they can't. Just ask to speak to the optician that tested your eyes, as it's them that would take the rap for refusing to provide the prescription, not the support staff"Most of the people ... were unhappy... Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy." -- Douglas Adams0

Hi. Has anyone had a problem with the recent Optical Express free eye test offer? My husband used the voucher today but was not given a copy of his prescription. The voucher was not dependent on anything as far as I'm aware, and I thought opticians had to provide a prescription? Anyone had similar issues? Thanks.0

I have seen another poster with the same problem.
You are legally entitled to the prescription and it should have been given to you.
From their point of view they have just provided you with a free eye test which has cost them money (hoping to get back the cost from their glasses sales), so they don't want you to go and purchase glasses elsewhere.0 -
If you download the Boots Eye Check app there is a voucher in there to get an eye test for £5.0

Read the "free" eye tests posts, I too have been to Tesco for an eye test & when I asked for the prescription was told they keep it ! Should I complain to Tesco ?0

My wife had an eye test last week , free in Scotland. The frames she would like are over £200 on the High Street, but just over £100 online.
The website asks for pupillary distance, and states that it may be available at a small cost . She returned to the place where she had the test done and they have refused to give her the information, even if she pays , they state that she would have to buy her glasses from them. The same story at other high street opticians even although she offered to pay for the information.
Any way round this?0 -

Measure them yourself thats what myself and hubby always do.

One option is to use universities for free eye tests. There is an on-campus "proper" eye clinic which is open to the public where I live, and a quick googling revealed that quite a lot of unis up and down the country offer optometry courses. The students have to do training as part of the course, supervised by qualified professionals. I've no idea how much their frames and lenses cost in relation to the big names, but the test is always free, at least in my local one.
When I ordered a pair of glasses online I went to the clinic where they measured my pupillary distance for me (for free, though with a warning that glasses bought online might be dodgy) and mentioned about their eye tests being free. I had already paid for my test elsewhere but will keep it in mind for the future. The person I spoke to was very keen for the clinic to be able to engage with the community (what a buzzphrase!) and I would think it's important for the trainees to have as many "real" customers as possible and not just their coursemates having eye tests over and over again if business is slow.
I hope this helps someone.0 -
The free eye test offer in this weeks email is not being honoured by optical express. You need to purchase glasses to get a free test. I only found this out and had to fork out £15Lurking on the forum since 2006!0
