If you cant get hold of a copy of the John Lewis's 'Editions' magazine for your free eye test voucher and you dont qualify for a free eye test on the NHS. You can find a £13.75 half price voucher on the D&A website.

I went to Tescos in Reading a few months ago to take advantage of their free eye test. Because I wanted updated lenses put in my current frame I had to go back to my usual opticians to do so. They made up my glasses with the new prescription Tesco had given me, but I started getting bad headaches straight away. Sometimes you do get a headache with new glasses when your prescription gets stronger, and this had increased a reasonably large amount from the previous year, so I just thought it would take me a couple of days extra to get used to it. After about 5 days with really bad headaches and being barely able to look at a computer screen (I am self employed so this was not a good thing) I went back to the opticians who made up the glasses. They checked that they had put the correct lenses in according to the prescription etc and couldnt find anything wrong. They booked me in for a free of charge sight test to check the prescription. Their optician found that the Tesco optician had given me a prescription that was too strong based on what she saw when giving me the eye test. This opticians then redid my lenses free of charge, even thou it was not their fault, they had just followed the prescription they had given me.
In the meantime my other half had also had his free eye test done at Tescos. We booked him in at our usual opticians, the ones who had fixed my problem for another sight test (paid for). They found that the Tesco prescription had got his astigmatism wrong by 90 degrees!!
Free or not we will not be going back
I'm sure this is not always the case but I wanted to explain what had happened to me.0 -
It's a simple fact recognised by all those involved in the profession that the price you pay for cheap free sight-tests is missed eye disease. Providing all you require is a pair of glasses then take the bargin and get the free test. If however, you want the checks for glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment, tumours etc then go somewhere else.
Don't forget FREE sight tests means the optometrist makes zero income - so ask yourself where does the revenue come from? Answer expensive glasses.0 -

i have had glasses all my life and feel completley fleeced by opticians, you are after all making money from disability and disadvantage.
I get a sight test because i want my sight tested, i am more than able to seek medical refferral should there be other symptoms and i do not want to be bullied over a till into getting further unneccesary tests (what are the chances of joe bloggs having symptom free detectable difficulties??).
I was not aware that the nhs has enforced free eye tests on optometrists and that they do not recieve any recompense at all, that is an issue between them and the employers (not one for joe public)
Not great to know that optometrists push up the price of glasses to make more profit though.
Dodgy arguement mate, your not on sound ground at all:rotfl:0 -
I use boots for my opticians have done for a long time i prefer them to anyother optician. They arent free but i prefer to use them than the 'free' tests.MoneySpendingExpert0

Having read this I have registered to be able to reply - I too had a free test in Reading Tesco's and have expeirienced the exact problem - I took my prescription to specsavers and they made the prescription for me - when I went to collect I couldnt see properly through them- to read I had to almost turn my head sideways so they kept adjusting them and after a couple of hours I agreed to wear them for a week - I lasted a few days and insisted on having my money back - which to be fair they did but they told me that it must of been the presciption and they would (charge me) for a retest..... so I thought no - they just want me to pay. So I went back to where i have been before ((D&A )) paid for test - lo an behold tesco were WRONG
Like you I will never go there again:mad:0 -

Had a free eye test done at the Tesco Extra in Portsmouth this afternoon but they wouldn't give me a prescription to take away. I've got a voucher for Glasses Direct and I wanted a new prescription to use. Any suggestions about where I stand now?0
