HD camera MP4 to Avi (Video Convertor)

Ive downloaded a convertor from download.com, which appears to do the job, but it cuts the video down in size.
The camera we have is HD, its the Flip Ultra HD camera which i think is either 720 or 1080p. It doesnt really matter, as we just want to shrink the video.
A 2min video is somewhere near 100mb which is very poor as we cant send this via the internet to family members, upload to facebook etc. I would dread to think what a school play would be in size, maybe 500-600MB.
The program we have does not impose an image over the video, nor cut the video to a certain length, it just squashes the picture to 720x 564 in size.
Can anyone recommend anything that we can use instead, its not for full time use, just for sending files back to the uk via emails etc.
Anyone?

You can upload to a 'file sharing service' which in turn will produce a link which you can send to your intended recipients. They can then download and play the video in it's original format.
You can use MediaFire for files up to 200MB and MegaUpload for larger files up to 1GB.0 -
Thanks,
Im trying to avoid sending & uploading large files as its going to take ages.
Im on a 2MB connection, so not very well. I can however send files using outlook, which will press on with the upload to hotmail etc through the night.0 -
In order to make the file smaller to send you are going to reduce the bitrate, but if you keep the same width and height this will lose quality so you will be better reducing both.
One thing thats hard to learn in video is that it's bitrate multiplied by duration that gives file size - the file size is not affected by width and height. It's picture quality that is affected by width and height as this determines how much information you need to store in the given filesize. If you're trying to store a lot of picture information in a small filesize thats when it looks bad.
Here's an example I hope helps:
60 seconds of video at a constant bit rate of 2MB/s will always give a 120MB file regardless of resolution (width and height).
Now factor in the resolution. If each frame is 1920x1080 you have to store 1920x1080x60 frames (total of 124416000 pixels) and only have 120mb to do it in.
If the resolution is 320x240 you only have to store 320x240x60 (total of 4608000 pixels) which is a lot less picture information so the quality will look better.
Think that all makes sense.
Most people sending video over the internet will choose good compression codecs such as DivX, Xvid, or H.264 for video and MP3, AAC or AC3 for audio. Of course this also depends on what will be used to play it on the other end (eg is target device PC, DVD player, etc)
You could use a bitrate calculator to help project the filesize before converting.

Staxrip or handbrake will convert the video, let you resize it, and it'll output to a specific filesize. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Handbrake will only convert to mp4 or mkv.
avi output isn't supported any more by handbrake.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Yep, I don't think the OP specified a preference for any container though. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

Erm.... even if you could send such large attachments via email, you would still be uploading. In addition, anyone receiving the files would still have to download them.
Just upload them in their current form to a file hoster as advised and send them the link.0 -
Donnie, they're massive. Much bigger than they need to be. 100MB for two minutes. They still need to be uploaded and downloaded of course, but 50MB/minute is crazy. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0
