iPhone os4 software bugs (3G & 3Gs)
Not sure where to start here, but I have issues with my 8 month old (from new) Apple iPhone 3G.
Two weeks back, when the new iPhone 4 was released, Apple on the same day released their os4 which can be downloaded onto 3G and 3Gs handsets. Anyone who has one of the handsets may alreday know of the problems that ahve popped up. Firstly, the iPhone would not sync up correctly, problems with backing up. I installed the new os4 after some problems, now I wish I never had. For those not in the know, the os4 software is Apples official and not a 3rd party app.
Since putting it onto my phone, the phone is very slow to respond. Most apps now longer work. Spell checker has stopped working. Internet use is interrupted. Phone takes a long time to turn on. I cannot make or receive calls. And battery drains extremely quick. I never had a single problem with my 3G until I installed the os4. I have spoken to Apple, but no luck. They are only interested if I except their tech support for £25 per query and from what others I have spoken too on the Apple forums is that Apple just inform you how to reboot the handset, which I have to do every single day for almost two weeks.
There are a couple of 3rd party sites which offer the downgrade software (pre os4) but the problem comes if you are running Windows 7 which I am. I use W7 home premium which the XP mode is not functional.
Anyhow, I have contacted O2 who I had the phone from. All they say is that I can hand them the phone for Apple to reinstall os4, which I have done three (3) times already to see if it would remove any bugs.
I have spoken this afternoon with my local Trading Standards who inform me that as the phone is only 8 months old, I can return it to O2 under the 1979 Sales Of Goods Act saying the device is not fit for the purpose it was sold for.
What is enoying is that Apple have been made aware of this and commented on the issue saying they wish for customers to upgrade. This does not help the thousands of people who, like me, have a 3G running on their new software which is buggy.
I am going to try what Trading Standards have suggested as I am not happy with the phone as it is almost unusable. But I would also like other peoples views on this.
Many thanks
Jon

OS4 seems to work very well on my 3gs but the original 3g handset has a slower processor so my guess is it might struggle.
Perhaps apple is hoping it will push original 3g users to upgrade!0 -

Sorry to learn about your episode, as the previous poster suggests it could be to do with the difference between the 3g and 3gs version, as the unit worked as intended from new and only shown problems since the upgrade of the OS, then I don't feel you will have much of a case to answer.0 -
Cheers guys for replying.
To be honest, I am hoping I do have some sort of case. I did make it clear to Trading Standards that I had no problems with the 3G until I installed the new OS4. But they did inform me of the 1979 Sales act as its a official software update and open for 3G users to install.
Now I understand that the OS4 is too powerful for the 3G handsets, shame that Apple decided to keep that too themselfs until people contacted them with the problems. At the end of the day, it's making Apple money as they charge £25 per pop for technical queries. Crafty move. But Apple should have been honest from the offset and made it clear to anyone witha 3G/3Gs handsets that installing the new software could cause issues for the handsets, or better still, not allowed the installation or included the software upgrade when syncing up the handsets.
I have to use the iPhone for business. And with these problems, I now have to look for a workable phone. Expense I could do with out.

Mate I'm running W7 HP and downgraded fine to 3.1.3, follow this guide exactly. http://www.blogsdna.com/9175/how-to-downgrade-iphone-3g-4-0-os-to-3-1-3-firmware-on-windows-mac.htm
Its designed for OSX but to get to the command prompt in windows
hit start,
type run,
type CMD
cd desktop
iRecovery -s
and rest as the guide.
But i'm curious, I got this on contract 4 months ago, Mine is useless on iOS4 does that mean I could return it?0 -
I can only repeat what Trading Standards told me, which was a yes.
Thank you for the link above. I will try that before approaching the O2 store to see if I can save the phone.0 -
Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset all settings
Backup first! Just incase! I had loads of problems of problems with my 3G, spoke to o2 on the phone and this is what I was recommended. Phone much more responsive now.
Hope this helps!0 -

Thank you for the link, but sadly no joy. I can only think if it's the software version of iTunes as that link was useful for the 9.1 version of iTunes which is now updated to 9.2 as of 3 weeks ago when the iPhone 4 was released.0 -
my missus got 3g on orange and it has been awful since update, tried numerous re boots and restores to no avail.
my 3gs has not gone slow since upgrade but the battery is truly terrible now,on 3.1.3 it was normal iphone battery however since ios4 it drains super quick.
roll on spirit jailbreak i say,but with apple rumoured to be releasing 4.1 soon it could be a few weeks off yet.0 -
Since updating to 4 my 3GS runs tomtom terribly slow and looses GPS fix.
I spent hours putting my apps into folders- and then the folders dissapeared!
Rebooting is a daily event.
If 4.1 does not solve this what do I do? Perhaps I would not have the above issues on an iphone 4, but the reception issues are putting me off.On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0
