The light was on & off for the start of week.cybergibbons wrote: »You should have called the first time the service light came on really.
It started the Tuesday morning and was constant by the Thursday. This is when I rang them and they said the car only has 1 month warranty and they advised I took it to the garage across the road where they do their repairs. They didn't seem to care when I call them...not their problem basically!0

Yet another posters who knowledge and attitude changes when they don't get what they want to be told.
The legal position is that it will come down if they fight it (which I am assuming is Arnold Clark - means they will) that it will be a case of whether it was faulty at the point of sale (well no - it had an RAC report and worked fine for a month) and whether the fault is unreasonable given the age, price etc ( a simple troll of the internet shows this is a common fault), further to this you very likely increased the problem my continuing to drive it with an engine light on.
To be perfectly honest I dont think you wiill be covered under the SOGA. Why is it people want to pay 2nd hand money but get new car quality!0

Im just getting other peoples opinions...and no, its not Arnold Clark.
I feel the car has a major fault resulting in me not being able to use it.
For what I paid, I'd expect it to last longer than a month.
The car was £8399 and 4 years old. with just over 60k miles.
With regards to me driving it with the light on, the car still worked so it got me home. Its why it goes into limp mode so you can get back without causing more damage to the engine.
If it comes to it, I'll have to pay for the repair, but as stated before, 1 month use of the car it then breaks, thats not good enough!0

You should have called them when the light first came on, and stopped driving it. That's what the manual will say, and by not following the manual, you've weakened your position greatly.0

my mercedes had a dpf fitted, i was told that using the incorrect spec oil (non low ash oil) would clog and damage the filter, if you have proof that they used the wrong oil(mercedes dealer put the wrong oil in mine and listed the incorrect oil in the service book) then i would use that as my line of attack, but as has been mentioned previously by driving it with the engine managment light on you may have caused yourself an issue also
ETA my shogun developed a fault with the 4wd system about two months after i brought it(06 plate car) and mitsubishi sorted it out for free without question0

Thanks for that. It clearly states what oil they used in the Service Book, which is wrong.my mercedes had a dpf fitted, i was told that using the incorrect spec oil (non low ash oil) would clog and damage the filter, if you have proof that they used the wrong oil(mercedes dealer put the wrong oil in mine and listed the incorrect oil in the service book) then i would use that as my line of attack, but as has been mentioned previously by driving it with the engine managment light on you may have caused yourself an issue also
With regards to the light, it was on for a matter of a minute or 2 then went off. The car performed as normal and I thought nothing of it.
When the light was constantly on, this is when I contacted the garage who advised me to take it to their local repair garage they use, which is what I did.
Their computer didn't work to get the fault codes, which is when the EGR was cleaned out.
After that is when the real problems started...0

hi. i would definantly recomend that you find a local independant vauxhall garage and ask their advice, basicly there isn't a fault as such with the car,it's just the dpf is clogging..modern cars do this all the time, basicly the car is being starved of oxegen, but the incorrect oil is makeing it worse...your car being a turbo diesel should use fully synthetic oil, probably castrol edge,so i think it would be worth you getting the oil changed...please take my advice with a little caution as i'm in no way a qualiffied mechanic.but my son has a 2yr old vw polo and every 2-3 days he has to drive in 3rd gear at 40mph for a couple of miles to clear his dpf..tacken the car back to vw and they have said that this is perfectly normal.......i believe that most modern diesels have these dpf fitted and they are rubbish....as for £750 to change the filter? i would of thought that was a lot over the top?? also check out the vauxhall forums and see how many people are having the same problem and their sollutions? as for the garage that origanaly sold it i don't think they could be held responsible for a inherante fault with this type of filter.......you havn't bought a lemmon, just a modern diesel that has it's own quirks.my son has learnt to live with his over the last 12 months and now knows how to drive the car correctly....hope that this responce goes someway to put your mind at rest0

£750 is about the cost of a DPF for my old mercedes, incidently turbo diesels need synthetic oil, cars with DPF filters fitted need low ash oil, suggesting that you should drive your car differently to one without a dpf is a tad silly imo, if the garage your dealing with isnt a vauxhall main stealer then i would suggest getting there opinion on the matter, but not using low ash oil will clog up the dpf , i was told by mercedes that they need changing about every 60,000 miles but dont know if that is correct or not0

You should have taken action the first time the light came on.0
