but do you need to install it first to sign on if you are using the provided router, I presume no but would like more confirmation before thinking about taking on their new deal
many thanks0 -
Thanks for the help,
i am with aol because they had a free help line ( believe me i needed it ) and since then i have had no real problems.
I shall install tomorrow when the kids have gone back to school (hooray).
Summary.
So i don't need to put aol on my Laptops
and i DO need to put protection onto each laptop. Not ashamed to say ABBA are Great :j0 -

You don't need Aol software installed. I'm using Aol right now with no software installed. My router signs in for me with it's own screename.
It might be useful to have Aol installed on at least one computer so you can access AOL help and change your AOL settings
. In fact most of the guides on how to configure the routers from AOL are available fastest thought the AOL keyword system.0 -
Speaking of AOL software, see what StopBadware (backed by Google) have to say:

and until recently it didn't uninstall properly:

Oh dear, it's getting confusing already..
the router has built in firewall protection so why do i need to put even more protection onto the laptop
sra, my main family PC has aol gold on it, along with a barrage on anti virus, anti-hacker, stuff etc etc, so will i need all this once the new router is installedNot ashamed to say ABBA are Great :j0 -
The router acts as a hardware firewall for all computers attached to it.
However each computer has its own local network address and therefore they work independently as far as being exposed to internet risks is concerned. So you will need the same level of virus, spyware and malware protection on your laptop as you already have on your main family PC.
Think of your router as analogous to your home phone. You can use it to ignore unsolicited cold calls to your number, however you can still phone out and allow calls back from numbers that you have invited and trust. That's kinda how web surfing works. Every time you call up a web page you are inviting that website to send data back to you (the webpage contents), so your router firewall lets it in.
However sometimes the stuff you innocently invite in (dodgy websites, email attachments etc) contain viruses, spyware and malware; so it can get behind your routers firewall and onto your PCs. That's why you need the extra layers of defence (antivirus etc) running on each pc.

Yes it needs all the anti-spyware/anti-virus/firewall stuff.
Personally I keep my software Firewall off most the time since I have the router potecting me, but then I'm very careful.
I turn on the software one if I think something strange is going on to check what's going out of my computer - which the router's won't do0 -
