I have upgraded to aol gold, and have recieved a free Netgear router DG834G.
I have read coutless other posts on wireless routers etc and am worried about setting this router up so that two other laptops can also access the internet along with my PC.
Question 1. Do i need to install aol onto the laptops before installing the router.
Question 2. Do i need to have virus protection etc, on each laptop as well as the PC.
Question 3. Is it better to use the easy installation disc from aol, or should i try to set up the router manually.
Is there anything else i should do before trying to install this router.
Many thanks

set it up with a wired ethernet connection, get it working on aol first, then sort out the wireless..
make sure you secure it with encryption..

if you were using anyone other than AOL.... then you wouldn't have to install anything on any of your pcs..
im not sure how aol do it but you will probrably have to have their software on each machine.. to be honest, unless you are tied in now, i'd drop AOL and go with someone else.. anyone else.

1. You do not need to install AOL on any of your computers.
2. Each PC needs it's own anti-virus, firewall etc.
3. Do it yourself, it's easy enough. This page tells you what you need to do but use WPA-PSK encryption instead of WEP.
HTH:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Not a very helpful post and it does not answer any of the questions.

i can't offer some friendly advice..? i thought this was a techy forum.. i don't know any techy who would listen to someone say "i;'m on AOL" without balking and telling them in no uncertain terms that "that wasn't the wisest of moves"..

Just make sure you change the MTU to 1400 in the WAN setup box other wise you cant access the internet properly
Side note: I have been using AOL for over 7 years, 3 years on B/B and have had no problems, they are one of the few ISP's that I have had no problems with and i like the idea of no restriction on the internet, I dont use the software but just use thier internet.0 -
My experiance with AOL is that you do need the AOL software installed on the PC's using it and they needed to sign on. This was before AOL sold a network product as part of their stuf maybe they have changed things I dont know but it wouldnt work the way every other ISP works.
Hey your "danmed" if you do and "danmed" if you dont. LOL Personally I agree that AOL are not the choice ISP but there are lots of people that use it mainly because of the free disks they used to send out0 -

And because having installed it they find it too difficult to remove later :eek:0
