I think the manufacturers started it with using white cars for lots of ads. Audi R8 is the first one that springs to my mind (mmmmm)

A few years ago, no one wanted one. Then Audi and Saab told them that white was fashionable, and now anyone who can't think for him/herself wants one. And I bet you have to pay extra for white now!

Have a car in black magic/diamond black vag paint and it looks dirty no time after washing it.

White cars are the way forward.

They weren't popular because it was non metallic and was actually cheaper as you didn't need to pay for metallic paint.

Now you get pearlescent and metallic.

A bit harsh don't you think?

I have had many different coloured cars but I am ordering a White Honda. Not because I want an Audi! but because its a fantastic slightly creamy pearl white and it makes the car look chunkier with the black trim, also will be cooler in the sun. The contrast with the tinted glass looks smart. By the way it costs the same as any metallic colour.

My current car is black paint but the metal underneath is steel colour so it show scratches really badly, I have to give back company cars in good condition and white won't look so scruffy after 4 years. Fashion doesn't come into it.

Why are white cars so popular now? After years of being last on most driving lists there seems LOTS of new ones on the road.

since most police forces started using silver cars.

I was always put off white cars thanks to a guy I used to have to work with. He was a really horrible racist, and took great pride in the fact that his car was white, and German.

Though I have to admit the very slightly creamy shade of white that Honda and VW/Audi are currently doing does look good on the right car.

Just don't get a diesel one as the yellow stain dribbling down from the fuel cap looks awful.

White is now sometimes the only " no cost " option on some new cars.

The greedy manufacturers are even charging extra for non-metallic options in a colour other than white.

It's just a fashion thing. 20 years ago, the majority of cars were red, then the fashion changed so that nearly every new car had to be some shade of silver, now white is increasingly popular.
Equally, colours fall out of fashion: In the 70s many cars were shades of brown - then we had about 35 years of no brown cars at all, but now there are chocolate-coloured Minis, and metallic bronze and brown cars back on the paintcharts. New green cars are quite rare (not silver-with-a-a-hint-of-green, which is quite common)

Fashion is dictated by new paint technologies becoming available, plus a desire to make sure that your 'new' car looks out of date and unfashionable in a few years time, so that you buy a replacement in the latest funky colour scheme
