White is now sometimes the only " no cost " option on some new cars.

    Only if base white.

Metallic / pearlescent can be a premium option.

Pearlescant White looks great imo, deffo the colour to have at the moment. Wasn't so good 30 years ago, as it looked crap when cars rusted ;)

Not too keen on red cars now, my old daewoo looked more pink than red!

Go to a motor show, they're pretty much all showing off their new cars in white now!

    It's just a fashion thing.

New green cars are quite rare (not silver-with-a-a-hint-of-green, which is quite common)

Fashion is dictated by new paint technologies becoming available, plus a desire to make sure that your 'new' car looks out of date and unfashionable in a few years time, so that you buy a replacement in the latest funky colour scheme

Do you remember about 15 years ago that corsas that came in turquoise/aqua green and purple? I often see cars of that age and older on the roads but never turquoise or purple corsas. Height of fashion at the time but a definite no-no now :D

Small white cars usually look OK but a white Audi Q7 looks like it's out to re-enact the sinking of the Titanic.

I saw a white BMW 7series LWB the other day, absolutely horrible.

I think it is down to the cars shape and its 'graphics' (the grill/lights and any trim) as to whether it looks good in white. But a large car in white without the right styling looks worse just because there is so much of it.
The Porsche Panamera on Top Gear last night looked horrific in white, but there's a Maserati Quattroporte opposite my office window that looks fantastic with its pearl white paint glinting in the sunshine. Golf GTIs look good in white, because of the simple form of the car, and its strong 'graphic'
