That's interesting, is it quite easy to twist a dogs collar and get this result? I don't think that is very brutal to be honest, one thing about kicking a dog or whacking it over the head with a stick is that after I got it off my dog I would be concerned about what damage I had done, however presumably the dog would stop long before any lasting damage was done if you twisted its collar as you described.

Got to be careful with this method, it's ok if you have something to twist the collar with but usually the only way is to put your fingers in. One friend ended up with splintered bones in two fingers and another a broken finger.

Seen or heard somewhere that setting off a personal attack alarm stops them fighting.

This seems to be the product to use, does anyone have any experience of it:

    1. Does it actually work in a fight situation?
    2. They sell refills but how many times can you use it before it is 'spent'

Hi, I kept the wound covered all night and cleaned it again this morning, it looks ok, its difficult to see Womble to see with his fur, he did curl his lip when I was trying to clean it so it is obviously hurting. He is limping a little today and when we went for a walk he only went a few yards then sat down but once he started again he soon began to trot along as normal. he was even ok greeting the dogs we knew. Because he was a resuce too and he has improved so much I was worried this would set him back. I think I will take him to the vets tomorrow though, just to be safe.

Thanks for all your replies. x

The same product is also sold as a rape alarm - just with a different label.

    1. Yes it can work, the loud noise startles the dog - sort of shrill air horn.
    2. As for how many times you can use it it depends how long you activate it for each time. It's a small aerosol, so when it's empty you just swap the top onto the refil.

I had one for ages - found it was never in the right place when I needed it!

No , that looks benevolent compared to the one here, ear splitting 138 decibels http://attack-alarms-online.co.uk/personal-attack-alarms/minder-personal-attack-alarm-with-torch.html

Yes, that's very true - but less of a risk of serious injury than many other methods maybe?

My staffie got a toy dog breed in her jaws and gave it a good shaking whilst on the lead; it kept yapping in her face, and my dog didnt know what else to do, she's not an aggressive dog. Once the other owner and myself were calm we held the dogs together and I used my hand like a claw and bit my dog in her neck. If you watch Caesar Milan that's what he says the mother would do to the dog, so your hand is like the mothers teeth. She let go straight away and we got the little dog off, there were no puncture marks, it was only a pup and it probably had it's complete neck in her jaws!!

hitting and kicking a staffie is a misguided action to take, they were bread to have a very high pain threshold.

    Hope your dog is ok.

I dont really understand all this choke the dog, bite the dog all your doing is inciting the dog to fight more as it thinks its getting attacked more by the other dog so fights even more .

If any breed is fighting and you want it stopped all you have to do is hold each dog steady and if one of them has a grip then you wiggle your finger into the back of their gums(right up to the back teeth where there is a space and push into it.) This makes the dog open its mouth and you can get them apart. A dog should not bite its owner but may bite someone doing this who is not their owner. What you also find with the staffy, APBT type breeds is that they dont snap indiscriminately at anything that moves near their mouths like most dogs do but will latch on to a bit of skin thus actually making it safer to get in there and stop the fight .

If anyone has problems with any dog attacking their dog on a regular basis buy or make a breaking stick. This is a good strong quality wood and its made into a flat edge. Takes seconds to open the dogs mouth.

Just as aside the dogs our ones have been attacked by are all owner faults. Totally idiots that should never have dogs in the first place.

cheepskate , you are either the Rambo of the dog World, or totally bonkers.

Put my fingers into my dog's mouth in the middle of a fight? Don't be daft!

I force his jaw to throw tablets down, but in a fight? No way. I value my digits, especially thumbs. Please don't anyone ever try this.

Best I think, if at all possible is to distance yourself from your dog during a fight. Let them sort it unless unevenly matched. i.e, drop the lead.
