dog been in a fight - should I let it lick the wound?

A staffie has just attacked my 12 year old sheltie. Luckily because he still has his under coat he hass a patch of fur missing on his ear, I noticed when we got home a puncture wound on his front leg. I have cleaned it witn salty water. however he keeps clicking it. I have put a lampshade collar on him, but should I just let hime lick it or elave the colar on to give the wound a chance to scab over night?

This staffy was 7 months old, the owners had had it 2 days and let it off the lead. It just came running at us and my dog hates that and gets instantly defensive. I really thought this staffy wasn't going to let go. The other owner had to tell me to stop screaming at them as I was making it worse (unfortunatly thats all I could do). The staffy has blood on it but I think that might just be blood from my dogs loose tooth.

Sorry to rant but I really thought my poor boy was a goner.

Hi meames, have no answer but wanted to reply as I bet you are shaken. How silly to let a dog loose after 2 days.
I hate dog fights, mine is nervous aggressive, so he is never off lead.

This is not advice, only what I've done from past experience.

After a shock, a sensitive dog would be feeling a tad upset, I would remove the lampshade. Then I would wash the wound with diluted Hibiscrub, it's the pink stuff the Vet gives us from time to time. I have some lurking at the back of the dog cupboard, it foams up but doesn't need rinsing. I would then bandage, not too tightly and cover with either a baby sock or pop sock as examples, taping the top also not too tightly. The idea is no loose bits to pick at.

Vets always cover wounds. So I suppose licking ain't good. Tempting though it is to fuss her, best not to, act normally.

Sorry to hear about your dog, how was the fight broken up? I am wondering what I would do if one of these dogs attacked mine (he's a lab/springer cross) and has made me realise I would be totally unprepared for this

The owners literally kicked the dog which partly what set me off shreiking. The smacked its head, I've been told getting hold of the tail should make them leave go because they will turn to attack, not very safe though!

they did snack it again afterwards which upset me even more because it soesn't really understand why its been hit again.

and that's why they have a bad name, and second hand dogs tend to be aggressive with other dogs, because some people have no idea how to look after them. I have a staffy who was a rescue, and have had her since she was about five months old, in February. She is never off lead, at first it was because we didn't know her, then when we got to know her, we realised she has "doggy issues" - she simply doesn't know how to behave around other dogs, poor girl. But she is learning slowly but surely. How dare they hit her because they are idiots and don't know the correct way to raise a dog? Flaming monsters.

ETA my dog would let go if you touched her tail, as she hates it (her tail), this would make her chase her tail instead.:o

What is the best way (or correct procedure if one exists) to get a staffie off another dog?

Great meames that you have some Hibi. Keep an eye for any swelling and feel for heat, sure you know anyway, that would be a Vet visit.

Hope you are feeling better. For what it's worth, I would have screamed too.! I shout when a loose dog comes near mine. Happened the other night. Two old softies came over to say hello. Asked the owner to leash them, but he hadn't brought one!

Awwww poor old sheltie, hope he recovers soon xx

I would keep the lampshad on tonight and phone the Vet for advice, they should have an out of hours service, they may advise antibiotics. Watch you old dog carefully for signs of shock, if he is not his usual self I think I'd get him looked over just in case. Remember to check his teeth too, if he has dislodged one that could cause infection or problems too.

As for splitting up dog fights, I don't think there is a sure way. I've dived in and grabbed them a few times and have the scars to show. I found a bucket of water slung with force in the face of the attacker worked well, or letting of a fire extinguisher, but you don't usually walk about with them to hand! A really loud shout can work, but can also egg the attacker on. Kicking can work, but again can make the attacker just hold on more. The one thing I would NOT do is grab the tail - think where your face would be when the dog turned around to have a go at the tail grabber..... right at the dogs level, not nice.

Hopefully the Staffs owners are now aware of what their pup can do and will get help and advice to prevent this happening again.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
