Pipex...Who are they??

Hi all,
To cut a very long story short. I received a letter from a debt collection agency 2 months ago saying I owed Pipex £33.49.
As far as I can gather they are an internet broadband service? However, I have only ever been contracted to and used AOL right up until I switched everything to Sky in 2007.
This debt is apparently from 2005 yet I have never recieved any correspondence from this company saying I owe this money.
I was told on the phone that they have sub companies who are Toutan? Bulldog? - I've never heard of these companies in my life till now but have found out from a recent letter (following a letter of complaint I sent to them) that Talk Talk is part of them too?
Again, I have never used anyone other than AOL and currently Sky.
Can anyone help me in establishing what other Companies are under them? Or has anyone else had this bizzare experience too?

I received a letter from a debt collection agency claiming I owed Lloyds TSB around £89. Debt was from around 2005, the time I left TSB and took my custom elsewhere.
Anyway - I visited the bank who were very helpful and confirmed that when I closed my account it was actually in credit so they refunded me rather than me leave with a debt. TSB said if necessary they would provide me with letter confirming I owed them nothing (I didn't need it) and they advisde me to pay the debt collection company nothing.
When I spoke to them they were only interested in taking a payment from me.
I paid them nothing and heard nothing more. That was last year now.

Thanks Penrhyn for posting the partner names.
Although I am totally confused now as when I was speaking with Pipex on the phone they informed me AOL was not one of their Companies. Plus I don't understand how I was never informed of this supposed debt.0 -
Write to them saying you dispute this debt and require them to provide proof of it. That proof needs to included the original contract with the original service provider and the bill in question that has not been paid.
We have Pipex now because our phone services were with Toucan.0 -
Hi Evilm
I have had three telephone conversations with pipex and written 2 lengthy letters of complaint to them asking several questions. That is in addition to speaking twice witht he DCA and also BT to establish what address the telephone number in question belonged to. I am currently waiting for a reply from them, which won't be anytime soon as it took them 2 weeks to send the first reply.0 -
pipex were not part of cpw in 2005, they were still part of tiscali then
cpw bought the assets of tiscali/pipex a couple of years back, tiscali/pipex customers became talktalk customersthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then

Hi Guys,
To clarify TalkTalk is not a part of the Carphone Warehouse Group.
CPW Plc and TalkTalk De-merged at the commencement of this financial year and as such operate entirely independently.
Details of the Brands within the TalkTalk group can be found on the TTG website here.

Still the same man at the top though;
Charles Dunstone - Chairman
Charles is currently chief executive officer of Carphone Warehouse and is chairman of TalkTalk. As the founder of Carphone Warehouse he was instrumental in creating the TalkTalk Business following the acquisition of Opal in 2002. Since then he has directed the continued development of the TalkTalk Business to become one of the leading fixed line voice and broadband telecommunications businesses in the UK. Following the Demerger, he will also be chairman of New Carphone Warehouse. He is also chairman of the Prince's Trust and a non-executive director of The Daily Mail and General Trust Plc and Independent Media Distribution Plc. Charles has been a TalkTalk Director since 20 January 2010.0 -
Hi Inactive,
It is the case that Charles Dunstone is the Director of both TT and CPW, however as you have also noted he is a "He is also chairman of the Prince's Trust and a non-executive director of The Daily Mail and General Trust Plc and Independent Media Distribution Plc"
This does not however mean that we are the same company, just as TalkTalk is independent of the Princes Trust and Daily Mail Trust Plc where Charles holds chairman and director status respectively, we are independent of CPW PLC.
Since the demerger its is not appropriate to leave information in the public domain which misleads consumer to believe we are the same company, as for the course of this financial year we have operated as entirely independent entities.
