If I went I'd just pack loo roll. All the rest's unimportant if you're on holiday.

No it isn't. I'd consider it quite important, if self-catering, to have the stuff there so that you can actually, you know, cater.

Loo roll is bulky if you're short on space and I assume they'll have that in France :D so it wont be on my list to take.

And that way you don't have to waste holiday time by having to do shopping.
We're on a small budget so we try and get our break as cheaply as possible, by getting a UK holiday from EBay or cheap sites.
The food, we buy tins and put them away a bit at a time, plus washing up liquid etc.
So all we have to do when we're away is buy the strawberries and salad stuff.

    .

Self catering doesn't mean that you have to prepare your own food - it just means that meals aren't provided.

    Really?

I know that, but it means you can prepare, or may be preparing, your own food. There are 5 of us going this year, and eating out 3 times a day isn't an option unless I hawk my body on the beach, or sell the house, so self catering for us means preparing a fair bit this year. The original post in the thread was about what you take with you to prepare food, so I thought that's what we were talking about.

I just remembered something else I take and you'll think I'm mad. My hot water bottle :)
Sometimes when we have a September break the nights can be a bit nippy, especially if we're camping.

When we went on a recent caravan holiday, I took washing up liquid, kitchen towel, loo roll, food bags. I also took a decent small frying pan (for eggs) and a sharp kitchen knife.

Foodwise, we took small amounts of coffee, tea, sugar, cooking oil, rice (one meal), bread & spread.

With all the stuff you're taking from your own house, it'd be cheaper to buy new curtains and swap bedrooms for a week.

We usually only eat out some days, and rarely in the evening, so I do fairly proper cooking even on holiday. I like cooking anyway, the reason for taking things with me is that it's not very economical to buy a whole jar of cumin seeds, for instance, use them twice and then throw them out. I'm not a 'plain' cook, and don't like eating jarred or tinned food more than necessary. The places we stay in are well-equipped - dishwasher, etc. It'll be different in a year or so when the boy is finally continent, because then we can stay at places with communal laundries. With daily sheet washing, having our own machine and dryer is essential for sanity.

I usually take a couple of recipe books with me too, LOL.

I always take at least one Loo roll when self catering in the uk just to keep the kids going untill we have found a supermarket and also take some washing up liquid as I wouldn't get through a whole bottle in a week so no point buying it there.
