Dead PC - help!!!

The kids pc died a while ago and after much investigation, I decided it could only be the motherboard or cpu. See this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=247211

Yesterday I rebuilt the pc with a new motherboard, cpu, memory stick, hdd and case fan and it's still the same!!
All i get when I switch on is the fan and lights, nothing appears on screen (have tried another monitor too).
All I have left to replace is the dvd drives, floppy and power supply. Given that I have unplugged the drives and still nothing - is it likely that a failed power supply would give lights and fan when switched on?

When you say case fan, do you actually mean a case fan or are you referring to the PSU? The PSU should have been your first bet.

no.Failed power supply wont work at all.
What are you running the graphics through?
If it is a graphics card and the same one as in your old pc,I would suspect that is the culprit. If the new motherboard has onboard graphics or use of a graphics card, try the onboard graphics instead else you can get quite cheap graphics cards somewhere like maplins.

Not true, as there are several voltage rails +5V, -12V, +12V so it's not all or nothing!

Also the graphics card has been tested.

  • any chance you are using the same monitor cable? That could be the prob. And I've had PSU's fail and they do sometimes give a brief burst of the fans spinning
  • Ok - quick reprise:
Old pc had lights and fans when switched on but no post and blank screen.
Tested almost everything except psu and decided it was either mobo or cpu.
Yesterday installed new mobo and cpu, new stick of memory (just in case), tried old hdd and new sata drive (neither made any difference), checked all cables etc.
Monitor works on another pc, another monitor does not work with this one, so it can't be that. New mobo has onboard graphics - I haven't fitted the new graphics card yet.
Other than the PSU I have no idea what the problem is.
Before pc died completely, it became more and more difficult to boot, just kept restarting after post and then died completely other than lights/fans.

I would say that the one thing that you have not replaced PSU, would be favourite (Sods Law)

  • Do you get any beeps when the machine it powered up? Is the speaker pin connected to the Motherboard?
    Nice to save.

The new mobo doesn't have enough pins to plug the speaker in. Speaker has a 3 pin plug and I only have 1 spare pin.

    What make/model is the motherboard?

It should be stamped onto the PCB somewhere.
  • The PC speaker usually has a 4 pin connector with only the outside two used. The pins it goes to on the motherboard are therefore: pin space space pin, if that makes sense?
Why pay more than you have to?
