i tried the drivers disk one last time it came to those files [ ksclock.ax,ksdata.ax, ksinterf.ax,ksprexy.ax,ksvpint.ax etc. ] i pressed skip on of them (about 20 in all) and on came the sound.

So thanks for the help most of it was most useful- and yes I am moving to xp very soon. I have a laptop with vista on and I personally find win98se much easier to operate .
