yes that would be ok, how would i do this?

The old fashioned Method would be to boot your computer with the Win98 disk, (be sure you set your Bios to "boot from cd rom" - more details on how are here -
    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/win98/install98cd/indexfullpage.htm ) - just insert your CD-Rom and reboot.

Nowadays the easiest method would be to stick your Windows files on the hard drive. Just copy the whole Win98 directory to your hard disk, by clicking and dragging its icon into a new folder (call it win98install).

You'll only need about 174Mb free, for Win98, and that's peanuts these days. Doing this allows you to reinstall Windows from that directory, rather than from the CD-ROM drive; it's faster, and it also frees you from sticking the CD back in every time you change a Windows system setting. Windows remembers where it was installed from, and that's where it'll look for its files.

From there its just a case of running the "setup.exe" file in your folder.

autoexec and config.sys loads tsrs, sets environment variables, and loads dos drivers, not vxd's

Doing anything with the SAS quarantine (if SAS is actually the culprit) will be difficult if windows doesn't boot.

expanding 256k of vxd and rebooting to test would take less time than it took to write this post assuming a floppy disk drive is available on both machines, or the W98 machine has a realmode cdrom driver in config.sys, or the cab files are on c: already.

    "" not vxd's "",

You may well be correct, it's been a lot of years. My memory was the config.sys runs BIOS routines which call CCS [ Current Control Sets ] pre O/S DOS which call post DOS *.ini files which contain the VxD locations and IOS routines.

I'm happy to be put right ' closed '

  • Well for a bit of a technophobe im quite happy, I reloaded windows, got on to SAS and restored the files so that’s a start and thanks for the help so far but ive still got a few probs.

    1) The graphics are MASSIVE and only 16 colours it’s not giving me the option to change the screen size and colours back to 32bit

    2) The internet is not connecting up (IM ON Virgin broadband)

Your help is most welcomed on these items

Guess you didn't take notice of post #24 until too late. :)

Open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, and choosing the Device Manager tab. It is also accessible by right-clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties, and selecting the Device Manager tab.

    Any yellow exclamation/question marks?

If you don't want to open up the machine you can use CrystalCPUID to tell you what's inside.

i ve installed most the drivers now there are 2 things that dont work

    1) lexmark printer- ive tried the installation disc but keeps coming up with 'install win98 disc'- but still no luck

2)no sound- it seems the problem is 'microsoft kernal system rendered' same problem as above.

i have the original drivers disc and the name of the mothe board is VIA km400 series.

    - is / are [ any ] sound drivers installed ? , once again in the control panel ?

for the sound there is an question mark under

    other devices
    PCI mutimedia audio device

when i try to install the driver a message comes 'please insert win98 disc' then when i do its unable to find it. is there a driver elsewhere on c drive i can see if it will install? its saying it cant find files ksclock.ax,ksdata.ax, ksinterf.ax,ksprexy.ax,ksvpint.ax.

the same problem for the printer when i load the installation cd- just different file names

as far as i can see everthing elese appears to be ok now.

I'm assuming you are using the on board sound chip and not an add on card. Most often the sound errors on these boards were [ weird ] not related to sound drivers themselves but to a bad install of chipset drivers, which in turn could not find the sound to allocate drivers to, yet in this case you say there are no errors on your chipset drivers.

I have no idea, and nor does Mr Google know what these [ ksclock.ax,ksdata.ax, ksinterf.ax,ksprexy.ax,ksvpint.ax ] are, any one else know ?

Your next step is to discover what Brand and Model your MOBO is, see donnie #31 post. Knowing which of the many, might lead to download of at least more up to date drivers than the ones you have for example the FIC version of your chipset

    - I assume you are on the net , are you ?
    - have you updated everything from the Microsoft site ?
    - the missing bit is what you list as ' other devices ', and is usually the SMBus

Have a go at this .. .. .. forget the printer for now

    - right click on both your (1) other devices and (2) PCI mutimedia audio device and hit the delete button, when it asks say yes delete.

    - shut the machine down [ not re-boot ]
    - press the start button, catch it on F8 go into safe mode, touch nothing

    - - put the driver disk in the drawer than shut the machine down [ not re-boot ]
    - - press the start button and allow it to boot normally

Has it reallocated IRQ's and found the bus or sound chip ?
