I've been having a bit of a clear-out and discovererd I have 8  old foam-chip-filled pillows! Not nasty or stained but thin cheapy ones, so I don't just want to throw them in the bin and freecycling has brought no responses so I'm looking for suggestions about what I can do with them...keep it clean please .

My own thoughts - I would like a little footstool/pouffe but have no idea how to go about making a casing, or from what. Or a sausage dog for the sitting room door but I only need one, not 8!

Any OS'er who has their thinking cap on know what I could use them for please? :o

    Hi sparrer,

There's an older thread with some ideas that should help so I've added your post to it to keep the suggestions together.

I can't use feather pillows, as I'm allergic to them :( The consequences are not nice if I do use them.

Thanks for the useful ideas for recycling old synthetic fibre pillows, as I've got several of these lying spare on top of other beds!

You can send them to me as I want some stuffing ;)

I'm actually thinking about replacing our old pillows next month and using the stuffing out of the others to make a couple of big pillows for the children to sit on/lounge on in the lounge.
Fluttering about an inch off the ground, I may fly properly one day and soar in the clouds!

I made a pouffe out of an old ugly pvc covered footstall I bought from a junk shop for £7.

I wanted a cover to go with my leather sofa, so I used a couple of pairs of old suede trousers and a shirt I had grown out of, that I was saving for some reason, cut them up and made up some patchwork with them. I used the stuffing from pillows to go over the original stool and soften the shape and then stretched the patchwork cover over the top and stapled on the underside. Covered the staples with brain which I glue-gunned for neatness. I then hammered in some brass tacks around the bottom edge.

Here is a picture, it has had a lot of feet rest on it, so could do with a top up of filling, but its not bad! Total cost was £12. I was quite proud of my recycling efforts and still get lovely comments from visitors.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • You've done a good job of that footstool, well done :T
I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead

That looks fantastic angela :T just the sort of thing I'd like.

I reckon I could give it a go, tomorrow I'll make a trip round the local junk shops and see what I can find.

Thank you for the idea :D
  • I have found a wonderful use for old pillows and old duvets. Use them for loft insulation, this will help with fuel bills and keep your home warm, Also save money becuase you do not have to buy expensing lagging. Just lay them on the loft floor or inbetween the joinsts.
  • Terrific - I never knew u cd machine-wash feather pillows... They're fine, but slightly stained - I'm buying pillow-protectors for the new ones! Mine become cushions for living-room/car.
