  • I have a large number of old feather pillows and cushions that i inherited from clearing a relatives' house I am loathe to throw them out so i thought you clever lot could come up with some ideas to help me as to how to put them to good use. I have no idea what type of feathers are in these pillows. This is my first post so I hope it,s in the right place.

dolbons - if this happened to me, I would first wash them (one by one, in the washing machine), then dry them in the sunshine. Depending on the quality of what you end up with, I would make covers and use them as scatter cushions, or if there were some very good pillows I would use them to replace old bed pillows on own and/or guest beds. Or use some of the feathers to give more fill to my existing pillows that are getting a little thinner.

  • I use them as a dog bed for my dog - although unfortunately my dogs home wont take them

at the worst, open them up, remove the feathers and use the pillowcase cut up as rags
  • If the feathers are really dead after washing, you can always put them min the composter. Apparently feathers compost rather well(not sure how long they take though)

I inherited some good quality ones - I had them professionally cleaned and remade at a dry cleaners (Sketchleys it was...) and I repeated this a few years ago.

    Not cheap:confused: though

Pet beds is immediately what I thought of.

Have you got loft insulation - they could be handy for this - sheeps wool is used for this too.

yes you can wash them fine - after all duck and geese tend to get wet too! I swear by feather pillows and wash mine once a year.

Hi, feather pillows wash fine. I wash mine on a 40 wash with fairly fast spin, then peg them on the line [they can take an age to dry properly] a tip is to keep giving them a good shake whist they are drying to help fluff up the feathers, another tip is to pop them in a tumble dryer when nearly dry as this really fluffs them up. If they still feel a bit thin then you could use them to make a gorgeous eiderdown.
