  • We didn't Mar, we had a couple of promising weeks in late April, then rain. Harvested hardly anything this year- no fruit, no toms or cucumbers, a few salad leaves and shallots and that was it really. Pathetic!!! must try harder next year.

Just looking at the news it's pretty widespread in Scotland. I know the gales are bad, youngest hasn't been out fishing for a couple of days now, and they had to bring the boat into the mouth of the canal for protection.
  • I am just watching Living with the Amish on 4OD and its about teenagers living with Amish for 5 weeks and they are a mixed bunch and one girl said how she found washing up so hard ' you have to put it in the bubbles to get clean, then put it in the clean thing to remove the bubbles, then dry them, so hard' Another girl finds setting the table quite enjoyable........some how I doubt these would cope at OS

WCS we certainly fifnt have much summer and it upset me how all my plans for veg failed miserably. The ground was soo wet I could barely dig up my spuds, in fact I may have to go against the rules and use the same bed for spuds next year because they are still some left in :o

Prepareathome, the kids they show on these programmes don't have the foggiest about how to do much of anything! Its not easy being O/S is it, somedays I feel like saying S*d it and give it all up but I just have to weigh it all up in my head and I realise I have to do things this way for my self respect.

I have never tried hare but do love rabbit.

i can't get my brain into gear tonight I think I may have done to much running about whilst OH was away. Hot water bottle and comfy PJ's for me I think.

:rotfl::rotfl: I just watched that on catch up. Quite interesting though :D
  • Ginny I asked my family to contribute towards some cloches for my birthday - I have 2 net ones (which i'm hopeful will cut down the wind on hardier stuff), 2 fleece ones and two short solid ones (which are fantastic, but stupidly expensive). I'm saving anything household which could do a turn also, although we don't buy a lot of packaged items. Am determined to grow more this year, one way or the other. The chucks have cleared a space behind the shed, which is in open sunshine backing onto next door's garden, and it's much bigger than I thought - going try and bodge some sort of lean-to there also

Lerwick Harbour is packed this weekend, all the arctic trawlers & cargo boats are in for shelter, and the wind was at 44 knots - which is over 50mph. Somebody said a woman was blown into the sea on Harris ? Our elect used to go off at the least wee thing but they put in new lines and its been better, but we will see.
I was the same last year, I think we all were. No sun because of the Icelandic volcano. That's the most annoying thing with GYO, you only get one chance a year and if you mess it up thats it gone !
Am cracking up reading about the teenagers living with the Amish LOL
  • Actually the girl who couldn't wash up was tearful at the end with happiness as she felt so good about herself that she is learning to do things for herself, mind you I think they might have sent them to the easiest sect to start with as they do use electricty, via generator for things like the washing machine but other sects are far stricter and they have to stay with 5 different families in the series so although most of them actually did work after a shaky start and felt good about it, I wonder how they will be in the next one.

I wanted to hug one of the lads, his siblings were sent to live with grandparents as his mum committed arson but he was sent into care and now lives on his own and he said how he misses being in care as he felt like he had a family and was not alone as he is now, I thought he was lazy at first but when you hear his story any mum would just want to take him and cuddle him.

I would love to be able to live as the Amish, just without the religion( its not mine) but as they explained in the programme every part of their life shows their respect for God how they work, dress, cut their hair . I admit I would miss laptop and audiobooks but then again they have such a close community I doubt after a few weeks it would be missed.

The stores of 'canned' ( preserved) goods the wife had made ( I am hopeless at remembering names but was a lovely name) was huge. My few ventures into preserving have always been disastrous but I know I must have another go, how can I be OS without doing my own preserving - anyone got any fool proof recipes, I do have quite a few books about it but I am just never sure if I have done things correctly or sealed it properly so end up throwing away what i have done,. Never known anyone who does it that can show me. Are there any vidio tutorials on you tube? Just thought of there, use it for crochet tutorials but never thought of preserving.

Although I've not been posting on this thread I've been reading it and (as usual) I'm impressed with how old stylers are coping in this materialistic world.

I saw the Amish programme and wondered why some parents haven't even taught their children to wash up or do laundry, far less making a meal.

Seeing the "canning" of food reminded me of my granny's larder which was always full of pickles, jam, etc, etc, all ingredients grown in their garden. (except the sugar and vinegar!!) :D

I won't attempt it, it looks an awful faff. I'd probly wipe us out with botulism.
