One thing is bothering me though. What's the point of having hens to get free range healthy eggs, if you are feeding them commercial layers mash ? Is that not just turning out the same eggs as Asda/Tesco really ? I wonder what you can feed them on that is really OS and homemade - and would they still lay?
As I work full-time AND am setting up a business in my "spare" time I don't have time to feed the girls on bits and pieces so I buy organic chicken food and also let them free-range during the day.
I don't buy organic food for myself, so any kitchen scraps wouldn't be organic, but that's how I sell their eggs - organic, free-range eggsMaking magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -
Have been buying a few inexpensive bits and bobs this week online. Just got a bag of Aida offcuts and various pieces of Aida for a pound or less but am struggling to find cheap thread - anchor or DMC. Its 99p a skein at hobbycraft and the amount I use thats just too dear.
hi most of the ladys on the cross stitch cafe, me included use
http://www.across-town-stitching.talktalk.net/ancstandard.htm
for our threads as they are 37p a slein for either DMC or Anchor or they do offers which is £16 for 50, £31 for 100, £56 for 200. the lady who runs it is very helpfull and all threads including the offers ''are pick your own colours''0 -

(((((((Mar))))))), it'll pass in time. Maybe you should just let it all out and have a good weep and wail.
Are you up to going out for a wee stroll? Or get RV to bring you somewhere (not too far or too taxing) for a change of scenery?Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Hi,
New poster here:eek:
3 of us in my household (me, OH and son aged 5). I'm really hooked on the old style way of living. Things I have done over the past year or so:- Collected free fabric samples to make patchwork cushion covers etc
- Made jam from loganberries/raspberries/blackberries/plums in my garden and foraged from countryside
- Making lots more homemade food (now my child has started school, although I work full time but mostly from home)
- Stocked up on clothes and shoes (and toys etc) from bootsale for my son (absolute bargains at the boot sale near me, clothes/shoes 50p each)
- Use slow cooker more.
- Getting lots of freebies (using Freebies forum here!), also received lots of vouchers after emailing compliments to a variety of companies
- Walk rather than drive
- Grown as much fruit and veg as we can in the garden.
- Only buy fruit and veg that are in season.

hmm bit dubious on the legality - but its actually illegal to sell 'home' eggs anywhere other than at your gate, so if you are taking them into work, then you are also breaking another rule, but....

Well, this is the really old style thread and not the Dept of Agric & Fisheries so not to worry eh
I think having chickens is a great way of getting "free" eggs and also an item to barter. If times are hard and money is short then we need to find ways to bypass money and live without it !! Which as we all know .. IS NOT EASY !
Our grannies and our grannies' grannies knew all about life without money. They'd be horrified at how much we waste, even when we think we're being careful.0 -
I had a look at the Telegraph newspaper online today and in thier finance section they have an article dissing frugality. It assumes all are frugal because they are mean, rather than being so out of necessity and totally miss the point that saving funds on basic necessities actually leaves more for the nice things in life. I'd love Martin to write in and counter thier arguments - any idea how to get his attention? MARTIN can you hear me????!!!!Pay off as much as you can 2011 challenge member 15:
