really old style living?

There was a sheila maid in this house when we moved in many many years ago and I cannot live without it. When the Landlord sent the builders in last year they continually asked if I wanted it removing, I think OH took them to one side in the end and requested they not mention it again as I was driving him mad, ranting about their stupidity
That reminds me of the massive fight I had with our builder when he wanted to take out our pantry.
It's a different style of living and we don't realise, on these (virtual) hallowed pages, that most people just don't understand.0 -
Houses in the 60s all had them and we couldnt wait to get rid of them and thought tumble driers the last word in chic. Now things are reversed.
We knocked down our pantry to enlarge the kitchen when we moved in here. Now I sort of half wish we hadnt..
whatever we've got we dont want it and want something else !0 -

I know i'm changing the subject cos everybody seems to be on about canners but i was wondering if anybody knows the name of the racks that used to be suspended from the kitchen ceiling and you would hang your washing from them to dry when it was wet, I know they had a pulley that you could lower and raise the washing. I would love one of these but everybody can remember them but not what they were called.
Many thanks.

I fancy getting one for the kitchen but I'm not sure how they fix to the ceiling? I'm afraid it would fall down with a full load of washing on it.Dum Spiro Spero0 -

Ohh what a lovely lot of useful links, thank you all but especially witchwoopiggy for the link on carbolic soap, what a great site! Mind you, it will encourage me to spend money, which is not what I really should do at this moment in time! But never mind, it will be money well spent!
Only, I am a bit confused, isn't carbolic soap meant to smell really bad? I don't know because I have never used it, but only heard about it. How do you use it if it is in block, do you dilute it? Thanks. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Have made a note of that site.
I just went in and checked it out for borax - as I keep seeing "borax substitute" these days, but not "borax".
Does anyone know where I can get "borax" please - or cant we get it any more anywhere. If not - why cant we? What is the difference between "borax substitute" and "borax"?0
